hey there fatboy

what heater are we talking about.. ?

i think i have the fitting instructions for the barn door warmaride heater somewhere.. if you want .. i will look for them ?  

or

if its the smiths heater  ? that really can go any where you like but most are fitted to the passenger side like the barn door warmaride heater ..

Fatboy,

There's a particular spot slightly on the passenger's side they are supposed to go, in order that other accessories can still fit.  Too far to the right and the Air-Chief radio won't fit.  Too low and the parcel tray won't fit.

I'll take a photo of mine tonight and post it for you if you like.  I have got original fitting instructions, but they turned out not to be appropriate for my heater core.  It seems there were a variety of manufacturers of those: some have the outlets coming straight out perpendicular to the heater body, others (like mine), have a right angle bend in them.

Once you see the mounting from the engine bay side it's pretty obvious whats going on, and straightforward to fit.

Strictly speaking the hose outlets should come through the firewall on the right hand side of the strengthening rib, but the design of my heater element (with the elbow in the outlets) meant that was neither feasible nor sensible, since that would have pointed the hoses up towards the passenger side bonnet spring, instead of back towards the engine.  So the element has been spun 120 degrees clockwise.  As I said in a previous post, there seems to be quite some variety in heater element design.  Other ones - such as Graham Fuller's - have the rubber hoses going through the firewall, to connect to very short outlets in the back of the element.

Can anyone tell me whether the original Warmarides came with any adjustment to the water flow.

I note/assume from the (alleged) picture of RET's knob that it will adjust the fan speed - but does the heater just become a heat box in summer (and is this a problem).

The later model holdens had a butterfly valve in the supply line controlled  by a pull cord. Has anyone experimented with this  Huh

Hi Tim,
the originals for FE/FC had an inline tap on 1 of the hoses.I have fitted a latter model (HT) I think tap on the head with a cable to turn the flow off. This has worked fine for about 20years.

Graham,
             I was told the same as you have described, but was also told that the tap had to go on a particular hose, not just either one.  Is this correct?  If so which hose did you use for the tap? Or should i say, what point of origin is the hose with the tap.
