Stinky's FC Station Sedan Project

A little bit different to the "normal" real cars postings, I thought I'd go through the birth of the concept. Whilst the work on the wagon has started, progress has been slow due to either money, time or space usually the lack of all three 

My love for FE/FCs started a long time ago, school years I would guess, memories of Street Machine feature cars with their arses in the air and triple-carbed sixes. The image of the "Old Holdens never die" t-shirts come to mind as well, it was the sedans that started it all off for my obsession.

At a drag meet (when Adelaide had them) I briefly spotted a FC Station Sedan, later I got a better (disappointing) close up look at it at a show and shine. Although it looked shit-hot from a distance it wasn't so hot close-up but I had fallen for the FC "wagon" and the weird "station sedan" badges that were on it.


So the dream started, then got forgotten while I was side-tracked with LC Toranas for a few years (still have 2 down the back )

Then in the late nineties I started hunting for an FE/FC Wagon of my own, nothing for months on end, plenty of sedans but no wagons. In the end I bought what was to become my Black FE Sedan as an unfinished project from a bloke in Mt Gambier. But I still yearned for the elusive Station Sedan.

Fast forward a few years to 2005, the hunt had continued but there was still nothing suitable for sale until I started widening the search to other states. I had managed to find a wagon in Castlemaine Victoria, usual rust and priced in my bracket if I sold my beloved '66 Galaxie, the deal was done.


When the car was back plans were hatched, changes made, but it was always my intention to rebuild from scratch it just wasn't clear what I wanted to do with it.


The idea of a woodie was thrown around for a little while thanks to some Alex's (customFC) fine artwork, a quick photoshop was done and then it was all put in the too hard basket.




Other plans were for a cool "period" slightly modified wagon, not unlike this one below, but although I love that style I wanted something different.


Then I went to a plan for a "Foose/Boyd" elegant modified with two-tone metallic paint and leather interior etc but if I did that I wouldn't be comfortable driving it because of stone-chips etc. Thanks to smithy for the photoshop.


Thoughts then went out to a simple "Street Machine", basic two-tone, Red 6/5spd and a nice set of mags, but everyone has them don't they? 

Then I found this in my computer's picture collection, I have always loved woodies and Alex's picture showed how good it could look.

A bit of searching on the internet turned up some photos of woodie wrecks where all the wood had rotted away showing how it had been attached. A bit more investigating and some more photochops from smithy and I think I have settled on the rebuild plan.
Woodie styling, my favourite colour (Turismo Blue), Red 6 possibly with triple Stromberg throttle body injection, Supra five speed and as yet undecided wheel/tyre combo although big 'n' little Tasmans with white line tyres are floatin' my boat right now.





So this is probably the last you'll hear of it for a months while I get my ducks in a row and clear some room in the shed

I really like your thinking here and look forward to seeing it progress.

You have some good options there - I like the wood that is lower on the door, but its your build and will look great whichever way you go.

Now get out there and get on with it!!!

What the hell - why not be different and have something that is uniquely yours? 

I think it's a great idea and you have some good concept drawing/photos by both Alex initially and then followed up more recently by Dean.  I must admit that I did like the look of the two tone metallic concept - but I do love some good wood! 

Any chance we will see it in Orange? and I'm not talking colour either!

Stinky I have the Station Sedan bug also and some big planes as well, been collecting bits for a while but haven't been able to buy the right car yet for my project no hurry still have to finish the Roadster and then freshen up my Ute before I get a start on one ,your consept as a Woody would be a bit of fun to build......FC427.....

Only if it's finished by then, I don't want another "Nats Rush Job" car, my black Sedan has paid the price already 

At least I know the re-trim will be cheaper this time around and the panel work shouldn't be too hard, if the door gaps are no good I just have to get out the sander 
The main problem at the moment is working out the door handles, I might use the old trick of the door lock knobs on the outside to keep things smooth.

Thinking up some good plates for it already, if I do a half decent job on it - KNOTBAD

Good original idea Glenn, it's about the only thing we haven't seen done to an FC so far, and it really suits the wagon shape, looking forward to seeing it come together.

The early woodies were all wood and essentially had a roadster cowl and a hand built wooden body from the cowl to the rear of the car, later cars had the door skins and 1/4 panels and boot, or tailgate skins replaced with wood, the last of them had small pieces of wood veneer screwed to the door, 1/4 panel and taligate skins with a stick on woodgrain insert underneath.

Personally I think the best of these were the ones that had the steel frames and the timber in place of the metals door, 1/4 and tailgate skins, they were not as prone to fatigue as the earlier woodies were.

Is going to be difficult to do, but geez, if done right it will be all class. Good luck with it

FC Woody: what a fantastic idea!

FWIW, I remember there was a mini-article in Street Machine many many years ago regarding an old Falcon station wagon that had been given the woody makeover: Wood-effect contact (as in the contact that kiddies have their school books covered in) that had been applied with a hair-drier. Then white-walls applied with housepaint, car dropped on its' guts and hey presto! Cheap woodie!

PS. I also remember a car in another old street machine article (an old blue/purple-coloured Ford or Lincoln woodie - my memory fails) that was christened 'Knot Bad'. I remember thinking to myself how clever the name was...

Anyways, I do hope that you go through with it!

As in your earlier ideas, I've always wondering how Foose would attack an FC!! I'd love to see it happen one day!!

The smelly one knew he’d blown it the moment he pressed send, his closely guarded secret was out, for years he had jealously kept it to himself, but now in a brief moment of folly he had shared his dream with the rest of the crew, he hadn’t meant it to go so far but with a small amount of encouragement he had finally let it out.
After all these years he was finally getting a woodie, his excitement was intense but it was also tempered by the fact that now “she knew”, rumour had already spread that the henchmen were being prodded and whipped into a frenzy of  bloodlust, he had planned on a slow start and a steady build but things were now out of control, he knew that without a weekly update his life would be worthless, the henchmen would be set loose to make sure the evil one was obeyed, after being a henchman for a while he knew what was coming.
 The gleaming black car would arrive in the middle of the night with not a sound except for the scrunching of tyres on gravel, the doors would open and they would emerge like silent wraiths, the Mexican, the fake Irish fecker  and the Joker, their breath hanging in the cold air, their Nasco hood ornaments gleaming in the moonlight and death in their eyes.
He knew they would be on him in seconds, and no matter how much he screamed and begged for mercy they wouldn’t leave without him promising to post his weekly update,
In desperation he thought about calling the good henchmen to come to his aid but he knew it would be a waste of time, the Penguin had developed a rare disorder from eating tainted hot dogs at the footy, the Pirate had been deafened by the high pitched squawking of his bird and the one they just call “Ed” was out riding his new bike he had hand built from recycled coke cans.
He now wished he had kept his mouth shut until he had thought things through, but it was too late, his secret was out and now he would have to produce the goods or live in fear and trepidation for the rest of his days.

stinky you know which version is my favourite so i wont go into it but i love the concept mate and im sure you could pull it off.
it wouldnt be too difficult to steam the timber panels to the shape of the doors either.

i say GO FOR IT. dare to be different.

A little more has been done, bidding on ebay  I finally got a set of triples, not the Strombergs I was hoping for but SUs that will suit the purpose just as well.
I have found a site on the 'net where a guy in the states has a throttle body conversion kit for SU and Stromberg carbies. So far he has only done setups for twin carb English cars, hopefully I will have the first triple setup in the world 
Once I have worked out what bits stay and what goes the setup will be throroughly detailed with lots of polish and chrome and powder coated carb bodies to break it up a little.

Well just over a year and not much has happened on this project, today it made the big move to the shed after sitting forlorn under a car cover outside all this time. I am guessing the redbacks are crawling out of their hidy-holes and populating every corner of the garage right about now.
The plan at the moment is to buy some 3mm plywood and some paint then do some real photoshopping. I'll stick some plywood panels one side to mock up the woodie and paint the other side to satisfy my curiousity for another idea.
Then the final decision can be made
