1  General / General Board / Re: Logging in. on: June 22, 2025, 06:48:07 PM
If you are having this problem, it is almost certainly related to an old bookmark for the site that you're using, that is the old 'http' version of the site and not the 'secure' one. A lot of browsers will no longer send credentials to insecure sites.

Just use the link https://forum.fefcholden.club to log into the site, update your bookmarks with the same address, and you should not see the "forever login" problem again.
2  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Chassis numbers on: May 11, 2025, 02:26:51 PM
If I have it right the first digit in the FE should be a 6, 7 or 8 (1956, 1957 or 1958) and they changed to FC with the new model.

Most 1958 built FCs also have an "8" prefix on their chassis number. This was changed in about December 1958, because it was recognised that the numbers were overlapping with 48 series cars, and a decadal system was clearly insufficient. Kind of a Y2K style problem in miniature.

Because only a small number of cars were manufactured between 19 November 1948 and 31 December, there were not a lot of FC models with chassis numbers that duplicated those of 48-215 cars from a decade earlier, but from 1949 onwards, the situation was clearly going to get messy, hence the move to model code and sequence and factory code.

I don't know about a gas strut conversion, but I do have some boot-pin kits for repairing the original spring mount if you're interested.

4  Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: Celica 5 Speed - transmission tunnel on: September 12, 2024, 08:57:36 PM
Hi JayJay,

It's beyond doubt that the tunnel has been modified to allow that gearbox to fit. The only non-grey gearbox I am aware of that you fit in the stock tunnel is a 4-speed from a Datsun 1600. (There is also possibly an MG 4 speed that fits, not 100% sure of this.)

The EK auto had a much bigger hump than the manual FE-EK to accommodate a Hydramatic, and this was always the go-to floor alteration back in the day. But EK auto floors aren't easy to come by any more, so fabricating your own seems to be the route most people have to take these days.

All of which is to say yes, your floor must have been modified. Will it fit a Trimatic? Probably, the Celica box is a fair size. If your car has an EK floor, a Trimatic will definitely fit.

If you can post a photo of the floor someone can probably tell you whether it looks like it was an EK hump. But if it was fabricated from scratch, you might have to get under it with a tape measure.

Hope that's some help.

cheers

Yes, I am using the https page.

Rob

What browser, Rob? Are you able to try an alternative, ie Chrome vs Edge vs Firefox?
7  General / General Board / Re: 403 on: August 10, 2024, 01:06:50 AM
Please check that you are using this page:

https://forum.fefcholden.club

If you are using anything else (i.e. http://fefcholden.org.au/forum) then the fact it is not using the SSL (padlock) version may mean your browser refuses to send cookie data or credentials, causing the forbidden error because you're being treated as if you're not logged in whilst trying to perform an action that requires being logged in.

This can also be the cause of being constantly asked to log in, which I know some people have experienced. Different browsers and operating systems seem to have different behaviours, but I can say I've tried multiple browsers, computers and mobile devices, and the URL shown in big text up there never produces 403 errors for me.

If you have a bookmark for the site in your browser, make sure it's using the link shown above.

Hope that helps.

cheers

8  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Help with identification of radio on: August 07, 2024, 11:31:33 PM
OK, so I just tried a copy-and-paste of the "problem paragraph" from last night in its unasterisked form, and I got an Error 403.

If you get a 403 error, that's a resource access error at the web-server level. I don't know why you would receive it, but it points to something far deeper in the matrix. The censored word list just converts unacceptable words to an acceptable substitute, eg if it was so configured, it would simply replace any use of the word Ford to F**d in a post.

Actually that would be pretty funny.
9  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Help with identification of radio on: August 07, 2024, 08:58:17 PM
I think there's a nanny filter in operation.  It seems to be triggered by "electromechanical chopper unit", which I will replace with asterisks.

Craig,

V*******s:  The contact points in the v******r suffer from the same problems as the ones in your distributor - burned and pitted contacts.  Once you have got the mechanism out of the can you can, believe it or not, pull it apart, clean the contacts, adjust the gaps and reassemble.  But the Ferrocart v*******s are difficult to get out of the can.  It's zinc, and the bottom lip is swaged over to hold the guts in place.  You usually end up breaking bits off the can.

Rob

There is not a nanny filter in operation, and this should be obvious from the appearance of the word "vibrator" in multiple posts prior to the one you were having trouble with. Look, I just typed it, too!

I can't explain what the issue was, but the "Censored Words" function in this forum is not enabled.

cheers

Those mods aren't anything too unusual in unleaded conversions. My car had much the same done when the engine was reconditioned. That's about 15 years ago now. Still going strong - didn't miss a beat Sydney to Broken Hill and back again last year.

13  General / General Board / Re: Please report any site weirdness on: June 23, 2024, 02:00:40 PM
Just an update for the nerds interested.

There were two culprits:
  • The one that looked like 'nbot' turned out to be Amazon, indexing the content for its stupid Alexa gizmo. If anyone has one of these devices and is asking it questions about FE/FC Holdens, sorry about that. It's no longer crawling the site.
  • Facebook - seems to be related to people posting links to stuff on the forum to Facebook groups, although the rate that occurs (that I see) doesn't scale with the amount of traffic. Anyway, they're blocked too.

It doesn't look like the bandwidth limit will blow this month.
14  General / General Board / Re: Please report any site weirdness on: June 01, 2024, 01:25:24 PM
Despite pushing the bandwidth limit on this site up from 30GB to 60GB, it still blew its top on 31 May. Apologies anyone who tried to access the site yesterday and couldn't, but I was unable to resolve it on the spot.

I've implemented some changes to try and block the bots, so we'll see how effective that is this month, I guess.
15  General / General Board / Re: Please report any site weirdness on: May 28, 2024, 02:08:40 PM
Well, that's the effect, the "nbot" crawler is the cause.

The forum usually runs to about 20GB/month bandwidth. This month it's pushing 60GB.
16  General / General Board / Please report any site weirdness on: May 27, 2024, 08:44:00 PM
Hi all,

For reasons unclear, some bot has been absolutely hammering this site all month, consuming vast amounts of bandwidth. It's probably some AI model, I suspect.

I have made some changes to try and deny it access. If you encounter any weirdness with your access to the site, please let me know.

(And yes, I appreciate depending on the weirdness, you might not be able to access the site to let me know.)

Apologies in advance if there are any unforeseen impacts, but the current consumption is absolutely unsustainable.

cheers

17  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: Panic Straps - Part Number? on: April 11, 2024, 07:54:16 PM
Its official name is 15.390 Strap Assembly - Assist Grip.

Part numbers are different for FE and FC, because FE has a variety of colours, whereas FC are all the same.

LH is 7411379-xxx
RH is 7411380-xxx

where xxx represents the trim code for the primary colour, eg 7411379-467 is what my car has on the left side, a Summit Blue panic strap. The trim code may not be the same as on the ID plate, it's likely just the first trim number to have the colour of the panic strap as the main colour.

All FC are 7411379-637 or 7411380-637, because they're all Black.

You know, a picture's worth, well, however many words all that is:

18  Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Dip Stick question. not a self analysis. on: January 24, 2024, 08:32:49 PM
I did not see that coming! Although I did not get to the Museum, I only heard very positive comments from those who had.  I wish them all the best for the Auction. Kevin.

Well, it's not too late. They will be open until April 14, with the auction to be held in mid May. You've got nearly three months to give yourselves a treat and get down there. Smiley

I'm an IT professional, and I absolutely loathe so-called AI. If someone starts a GoFundMe to have Sam Altman fired directly into the sun, hit me up.
