21  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Re: FC Paint styles on: April 16, 2023, 02:50:12 PM
Hi Newby,

Welcome aboard!

The answers to some of your questions can be found in our Tech Info area, where you'll see there's a ID plate decoder that you might find useful.

Long story short though, yes, the details on the ID plate should be sufficient to identify the layout of the colour scheme, along with the chrome and stainless trim (or the holes where it was). If your car has holes on top of the rear quarters near the back window, then it would have had the chrome extensions for the late 1959 style. If it has holes in the "C" pillar where the roof meets the body, then it would have had the short piece of stainless separating the colours for a mid-59 style.

The ID plate will have a TRIM code that describes the colour combination (eg in your case it's probably 311-xxx, meaning India Ivory over Fountain Blue. The xxx is the interior trim colour). Then it will have PAINT, and possibly TOP and INSERT, which will help you to know what exact colour went where. The page linked above has all the details.

Also, there's no direct correlation between the ID number and the chassis number, so need to worry about that. The chassis number is what gets used on your registration papers. The ID plate on the firewall is just details for when the vehicle was under warranty, being serviced, or repaired etc. It's not a VIN in the modern sense, it just helped the service department correctly identify specifics about colours, trim, factory fitted options, etc.

The chassis number is the sequence in the factory where it was assembled. The ID plate identifies the sequence of the specific body style in the plant where it was manufactured. (Some vehicles - like mine - were manufactured in one factory and assembled in another.)

You'll find there are lots of knowledgeable people on this forum happy to help you, so if the answer to your question can't be found in the archives of this forum, feel free to ask as many questions as you want.

cheers

Hi Kevin,

There have been huge numbers of photos posted on Facebook, that can be found by searching for FE-FC Holden Car Club of NSW or Vic or the FE-FC Holden Nationals. I imagine they'll find their way here soon.

There's also a YouTube video posted by someone not affiliated with anyone, but came along to the Show.

25  General / FE-FC Holden Nationals / We're here! on: April 05, 2023, 11:20:26 PM
Team Thommo arrived in Broken Hill this afternoon. It's my son Ryan and I, and we took 3 days to get here. Unlike most of the Sydney contingent, we elected to take the southern route, doing Penrith to Wagga, then Wagga to Mildura, then the last leg to Broken Hill. So to get to the 19th Nationals we stayed in locations that were sites of prior events. (Since we live in Penrith, I'm not sure that counts, but we'll take it. That was 2001.) Wagga Wagga was the site of the 2nd Nationals in 1989, and Mildura was the 6th in 1997. There are a couple of other members coming this way, but most have gone the Dubbo / Cobar route.

And now we're here for Broken Hill 2023.

Ryan has never driven the FE before (and really doesn't have much experience with manual cars), but acquitted himself well. I think he has a new-found appreciation for my driving too, because I seem to be able to make taking off smoothly, keeping her straight and powering along at 65mph look effortless. It's the difference between 35 minutes experience with an old Holden and 35 years, I suspect! He was happy to back up for a second go today, and I was happy to let him, so it's all good.

So here we are under the funky green lights of our accommodation, and the Ol Girl is having a well earned rest. Fuel economy was better than I expected (we've got quite a bit of gear in the car, and we were doing 60-65mph all the way.)

All up we did 817.4 miles, and used 143.81L of fuel. That nets out to 25.84mpg, or 10.93L/100km. Pretty bloody good for a 67 year old car. She did well.

We're so looking forward to a great weekend with everyone.

cheers

Omg tried to do the photos. That’s hard work. I’m sure it use to be easy 5 years ago.
Don’t think I’m doing photos this year.

Download the Tapatalk app for your phone, connect it to this forum. Uploading photos from there is absolutely dead simple.

I also did an interview with Jason Irvine of The Barrier Truth regarding the upcoming event.

It's live on the newspaper's website now, and will appear in tomorrow's print edition.

Broken Hill to host FE-FC Holden Nationals over Easter
28  General / FE-FC Holden Nationals / Nats Update 28-03-2023 on: March 28, 2023, 04:44:43 PM
Hi all, the following went out to all entrants today.

Hi,

Well, it's getting pretty close now. For many participants, departing is only days away. We look forward to seeing you in Broken Hill.

Attached is a sheet for you to print out if you are able to do so, to track your fuel economy. Make a note of your odometer reading each time you refuel on this sheet, and hand it in at Registration time.
If you don't have the facility to print this sheet out for yourself, you can just keep your own notes along the way and we'll provide the form when you get to Broken Hill.

If you're driving your car, we'd really appreciate you taking part in the Fuel Economy trial.

Yesterday I did an interview with ABC Radio Broken Hill to talk about the history of the Nationals, why we chose Broken Hill, and where we'll have cars on display to the public, that kind of thing. The interview is available for playback here.

We have now finalised entrant numbers with caterers, so it will not be possible to make further changes. However, if you have any questions regarding the event, just reply to this email and we will do whatever we can to assist.

See you in the Outback NEXT WEEK !!

Thanks Richard. I did consider driving my FB up as it is a nice drive from Adelaide, but I’ve got a driveline vibration I need to sort out before I do any more trips.

I assume you are still going. Have a great weekend all!!

Yes I am still going, but the size of my party is somewhat reduced, so I don't need this cottage. Much as I'd love to stay there, I can't really justify the expense. Particularly when I am not likely to get to spend much time there.
31  General / FE-FC Holden Nationals / Re: AirBnB Cottage in Broken Hill on: March 22, 2023, 11:40:03 PM
Seems no takers, so I've cancelled. If you're interested, get in touch, I'll give you the owner's email.
32  General / FE-FC Holden Nationals / AirBnB Cottage in Broken Hill on: March 20, 2023, 11:42:13 PM
Hi everyone,

I have a booking I'm about to cancel for this really nice cottage: https://www.booking.com/hotel/au/marlee-cottage.en-gb.html

Before I do, I just thought I'd mention it here in case anyone might be interested in it. It's walking distance from the location of the dinners, and would suit a family of four or two couples.

Let me know quick if you would be interested. My booking is not through booking.com, it's direct with the owner.

PM me.

Hi everyone, the following went out via email to all entrants today - check your junk folder if you did not receive it.

Hi,

After such a long wait, the Nationals are almost here! We are only a few weeks away from the event, and we are so looking forward to hosting you in Broken Hill. Our shipments of merchandise are arriving, the programme is getting printed, the trophies have been made. It's happening, people.

Some things you should be aware of to help you make your plans:

1. Registration

Registration and collection of goodie bags and other material will occur at the Broken Hill Civic Centre, from 12.00pm to 3.30pm on Friday April 7. The Civic Centre is also the location where all of our official dinners will be held, so you'll get to know it well. It is located at 31 Chloride Street, in the centre of town.

2. Camp Chairs

The site of the show 'n' shine has some public seating, but not huge amounts. The same goes for the destination point for the cruise on Sunday. So if you can fit some camp or fold-up chairs in the car, you'd be well advised to bring them.

3. Saturday Night Fancy Dress

There isn't any. You are most welcome to frock up and get your Priscilla, Queen of the Desert on, or perhaps your post-apocalyptic Mad Max leathers, but it's not obligatory.

4. Silverton and the Mad Max Museum

We originally planned to have going to the Mad Max Museum an optional event on Monday, and that is what was promoted in the Nats Brochure and Itinerary. Unfortunately, the Museum no longer opens on Monday, so plans have had to change. The proprietors have confirmed they will be open every other day of the long weekend, so if you are keen to visit the Museum and the famous Silverton Hotel, our advice is to go there on Thursday before the Nats properly commences, or otherwise get out there when they open at 10.00am on Good Friday, check out the attractions, and get back to Broken Hill before 3.30pm to complete your registration. If you are staying on Monday you will find there are lots of other attractions in Broken Hill itself to visit, such as the Royal Flying Doctor Service Outback Experience, or the Pro Hart Gallery and Museum, amongst others.

If you have any questions, please reply to this email and we will get back to you as soon as we can.

See you in the Outback.. in a couple of weeks!!

All the details available in the link at the top of this thread.

There will definitely be several groups travelling from Sydney on different schedules. As we settle on plans, we'll advertise them both here and via emails to club members.
37  Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Amp gauge wiring on: January 12, 2023, 09:17:17 PM
Here's the wiring diagram I used:

(That's right, no wires at all.)
I've got a regular Wilsonia gauge in my FE. I'm rather fond of the car, so I didn't connect the ammeter. Like Rob said, there's a lot of current carried on that wire. All you need is for where it passes through the firewall to wear through the insulation, or discover the hard way it's been getting caught in one of the pedal return springs, or just come loose off the connection, and you'll have a very nasty situation.

Just admire its looks, and treat the ammeter as purely decorative, is my advice.

cheers

Everyone who responded to our Expression of Interest Survey should have received an email with information about the event today. We had nearly 80 respondents, which is fantastic.

For anyone who didn't participate in the survey, the details are as follows:

Hi,

Thank you for responding to our survey of expressions of interest in the upcoming Nationals.

We have had a great response, with prospective entrants from all over Australia. After a long five years between Nationals, we are looking forward to getting back into this great event. If you haven't organised your accommodation yet, I suggest you don't delay, and get that sorted out!

There have been some enquiries lately about the entry form. We have been waiting for confirmation of a major sponsorship deal, which we are very pleased to report has now occurred. The level of sponsorship was a significant factor in the final entry fee, which is why the form has not been made available yet. We hope to have it published and available for you before the end of November, which allows two months to return it before entries close January 31, 2023. Its availability will be publicised on the official website, the FE-FC Holden Forum, the Nats Facebook page, and of course via a direct email to everyone who responded to the survey, like yourself.

The Terms and Conditions relating to the event are available on the official website. If you have not previously attended an FE-FC Holden Nationals, I suggest you take a few moments to avail yourself of how the event is normally conducted. It probably goes without saying, but only FE and FC Holdens are eligible to be entered in the event. Participation in the event is automatically extended to members of the following clubs:

* FE-FC Holden Car Club of NSW
* FE-FC Holden Car Club of SA
* FE-FC Holden Car Club of Vic
* FE-FC Holden Car Club of Qld
* FE-FC Holden Car Club of WA
* Canberra Classic Holden Club (formerly FE-HR HOC ACT)
* Classic Holden Club of Tasmania

If you are not a financial member of one of these clubs, you will need to join one, or ensure your club has an official invitation. The following clubs have standing invitations:

* Mid North Coast FE-FC Holden Club (NSW)
* Holdens of Age (Vic)
* Lions Pride (Vic)
* Southern Sydney Early Holden Car Club (NSW)
* Holden Collectors Car Club of Victoria
* The Early Holden Car Club of Wangaratta (Vic)
* Shoalhaven Historic Vehicle Club (NSW)

If you are a member of a club not listed above, please have your club secretary drop an email to this address nats@fefcholden.org.au seeking for your club's FE and FC owning members to be able to participate.

See you next April in the Silver City!
