1  Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: Grey Motor-Rebuild no.2 on: December 12, 2005, 11:50:27 AM
Sounds like it has a 3 1/8 " bore or 3.125", so a standard bore for a 138 (ek) is 3.062", with a 3.125" over bore gives you 0.063" so in that matter the machanic was right what's .003" between mates Wink
the next piston sizes that I know about are 3 3/16" or 3.1875 and the biggest 3 1/4 or 3.250".  Burnsy and I had a thread going about all this but I don't know how to link it.  By the way if you break into the water jacket there sleeves about.
Just out of curiosity, what are you doing to the pump and how much pressure will it make?
40/80 cam, my book is saying that your power range will be between 4000 to 6000 rpm! Hope you like changing clutches Grin  Have fun.

2  Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: Valve seat pressure on: June 18, 2005, 11:51:06 AM
Hysteria, the 350 chev springs were they the old or new motor, if they were new what make are they ie: crow cams ect?  I am still undecided, do I use the twin or tripple strommies....If you don't mind me asking how far did you go with the red valves?
Thanks for the feed back on the pressure though (what is your redline when you douple seat pressure) I'll start doing some more sums..Yay!

cer444, I know what the stainless valves are all about I had them in a stroker 186, my main concern was the rocker arms and bushes/bearings as I haven't found a suitable mod or upgrade in that department yet.
Am designing eng to work between 2500 and 5500 with 500 oops facter built into it, like I said befor more mathes....

Have been toying with the idea of stainless steel red motor valves in my grey head, this so far has been workable.  I want to uprate seat pressure,  how far can I go before I start breaking stuff?

I believe there are a couple of differn't width rods as well, are they relative to the length?

If your going to break the rules you might as well put a turbo charged RB30 in Grin Grin

Well Trevor JP supply pistons to 3 1/4 inch, no one has posted that its no good, so get what you can and go for it.

All right went to the ACL site and the JP site this is what they list online. Don't know if all these are still around the ACL document was posted online five years ago!
ACL
6KRY2075 STD/040  nothing further noted on these pistons ie standard bore to begin with.

6KRY2663 STD/040/060 The notes state that 3.125 is the standard bore for these pistons.
Thats all ACL had for greys.

JP pistons
JP0191 I beleave are standard 132 pistons
JP0202 are standard for 138
JP0220 are 3.125 overbore no +040/060
JP0527 are 3.1875 overbore no+
JP0196 are 3.250 overbore n0+

So there you have it.

Thanks for that Tony, I now go and have an argument with my cam grinder Wink

Just a mates wedding that I had to attend to!
A EJ block will do.
Have been playing around with Garys eng, done timing gear and all, have to do cam bearings which are thin on the ground at the moment, been told by camshaft engineering that there was 7 different cam grinds (factroy) for grey motors from fx to ej, trying to find specs for grind on fe.
Will see at next meeting and I will bring spacers.

Burnsy,
just been measuring bore, maybe I'm wrong but thats what my books been telling me, and I agree it would be .090".  Have only started to look at parts and how hard they are to get.

Tony,
yes they do have that oil drain, my parts man at Coventrys has the ACL books and he was telling me that the 3+1/8+.040" was all I could get now!  Do they greys have any over heating or cracking problems when you get them out to 151ci?
 Thanks for the help guys.

Burnsy, were you been hiding?  I had the origanal recond when I was about 18 they must of swapped block's!

13  Technical Board / General Technical / bore's on: May 23, 2005, 10:23:35 AM
Hey guys I have the origanal block out of my ute, I checked the bore size at 3.165 which is a hell of a lot bigger than the 3" that the book states for a fe. The pistons out of it have the Numbers RA2076 040 which I take to mean .040" overbore?
A 138 with a .040" overbore still only comes to 3.102" How far do they go? is there no casting changes to the bore thickness between the two blocks?
To make matters even more interesting, my parts man tells me that the only pistons still available for a grey is the 3.165" or .040" over size pistons, is this the case?
Anyway hope someone can shed some light on this for me,

Can anyone tell me if a eng s/n J53955 would be the same eng or a origanal eng for a FE ute serial FE-2106-760-A

15  Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: 186 / 202...? on: January 30, 2005, 03:41:39 AM
Hey guys don't quote me on this as I haven't had a chance to check my books but the crank and rods are the same from a 149 to the 186, holden then made a new crank for the 202.  Now I believe that 202 crank won't fit into the smaller engines as the main journals are spaced out differently, I played around with a stroker 186 about ten years ago and from memory the ford 221 crank would fit into a 186 or a 179 but not the 202.  All you need to do is ring up a local eng builder and they should be happy to tell you what you can and carn't do.  If you want your red to go fast $2000 rod hatfield super charger bolts straight on and is legal and when you blow that motor up bolt it on the next one. Wink

Camshaft engineering do about four different cam profiles that I know of, but like Burnsy said you gotta find a good cam

I had a alloy rocker cover on a stroker 186 with crow cam roller rockers, dont know brand of cover but to make it fit I had to die grind out some of the inside of the cover to make it fit.  Hope this helps  :-/

Thanks for that Ret, I reakon that it might be worth a bash, it's just strange that something that is supposed to be so good isn't seen all that often, were flash lube ect are an every day thing.
The link to the fuelstar page didn't work Huh
Rob. J that crank sounds like a hell of a lot of mucking around, sounds like it would almost be cheaper to have a crank made up from scratch :-/  I have heard around the traps that you can use a Jag vibration damper on the grey, any thoughts on that?

20  Technical Board / General Technical / Re: Hardened Valve Seats on: December 17, 2004, 02:15:46 AM
I've heard about these fuel star set ups has any one been using one for a fair while? How does it go? Does it stop valve seat recession?   Spend $400 on the head and get seats done or $400 on a fuel star, like to know more about it if anybody knows.
4hammers, have you heard of anybody useing mitsubishi E300 con rods in a grey, bring rod ratio from1.79:1 to about 1.9:1, but might have to get custom pistons. Will the Vauxhall main caps fit the standard grey crank?
