Can anyone recommend a GOOD octane booster?
I took the FE out for a run on the weekend and it was pinging with anything past 1/2 throttle.

or..... do water injection systems really work?

or ..... any other ideas to stop the pinging until I can afford to get the head done again?

did you run it on premium ulp or one of the high octane fuels like optimax or similar,as standard ulp is useless with high comp engines, also try retarding the timing a little ,
cheers Nick

if you used a later model dizzy like a hei VH commodore one, you may need to get it regraphed to suit your motor.
Water injection may help detonation and keep the chambers cleaner but most advantage of water injection is noticed with forced induction.
if you are using unleaded, try premium, if you are using premium try 98, if you using 98, going upto 98 plus octane booster may be uneconomical for a street motor but ok for every second weekend kinda driving.
I have a crane hi6 trc ignition wich allows you to adjust the retard while driving, you can also add accsessories to allow you to adjust the curve of retard as you drive or have the timing drop back at the point it is going to ping.
In the past I set my timing by advancing it till it started to ping, and then back it of till it stops pinging, I tried a timing light once and it mad the car go like crap.

Sorry, forgot to mention I was using PULP.
Just got a reply to my plea on another forum by the guy who built the motor.
