Twin point Vs Electronic distributor

Hi,

I pulled my twin point distributor off my donor motor for fitment yesterday to find it was in far worse condition that I remembered from a year ago when I got it.

The plastic gear drive at the base was broken, the points were had it, and I needed a rotor, cap and condensor.

The guy at repco who was about my age didn't have much of a clue, but could only offer another plastic gear drive, two different after market contact points that didn't clip to the T bar, a rotor that was different to the original and they didn't have a cap or condensor in stock anyway.

I decided then that the Blue motor electronic dizzy was sounding better and better.

I can get one for $125 second hand with coil, cap and leads from a local torana performance shop.

Do they require regraphing or will it run alright as is?

Would everyone agree to throw the twin point into a dark corner and start afresh with the electronic distributor?

Thanks for the help.  I tend to give ebay the miss as I'm not fond of sending money to people I don't know and not been able to see things first hand.

Nonetheless, I've searched for the item with no success.  I'm happy to pay $125 from a trusted source, and its only 5 mins drive away - think I'll get it tomorrow!

I might try a few other local wreckers and see if they have any for under the $100 mark, yet generally these sorts of parts can't be guarenteed anyway.

Is anyone with much knowledge on regraphing?

Why not check out your local Trading Post or http://www.tradingpost.com.au and see if there are any in there, or people parting/wrecking any VH/VK(?) commondores.

As to a re-graph, check with any performance parts shops, engine rebuilders or auto leccys.

I bought my electronic unit off EBay, when it arrived it was not the item in the picture from the auction, when I queried the seller it appeared they had mixed up and sent me the wrong unit, they then refunded all monies and told me to keep the unit for my trouble. I check out the seller and they turned out to be a wrecking yard. Some people on EBay are honest, as to wether it will need regraphing will depend on what your motor has done to it, if it varies from standard (that is the standard of the motor the distributor came from) then yes you will have to get it regraphed to suit your modified motor. Any good speed shop should be able to recommend a reputable shop to do the job.

i bought an electronic dizzy on ebay last year for $40 .the sellers name was lisamareep who turned out to be a wrecker in dandenong vic. i picked mine up but i think postage was approx.$8.00. they seem to come up regularly from this seller

This dizzy bolted straight onto my ht 186 runing 186s carby & headers but otherwise stock appart from gas. i cannot begin to tell you what a difference this made to the motor
i can now boast 75kw @ 90mph on the dyno!!!

so my advice to you would be keep an eye on ebay and go the electronic  .

Dave at least by buying the disy 5 mins down the road you can see the thing before you pay for it. Check for excessive movement in shaft if too much means bushes are worn will cause misfiring. If it has plastic gear, the metal gear on the oil pump will fit ask the wreckers for an old oil pump and take the gear off that.

I reckon ebay is the safest way to buy anything, mainly from experience, strange thing is stuff from US seems to arrive within a week and stuff from AUS seems to take a little longer, maybe we are slack and lazy.
I have a bunch of blue dizzy's here that still need testing.
the electronic dizzy beats twin point in every way, better spark and handles higher rpm, reliable and easy to set up, only downfall is the module can fail, it is easy to replace but if you buy one new they are expensive (about $90).
you usually get regraphing done from a auto electrician, I think you only need it if you have a bigger cam, you can run the car fine without the regraph but it will work better with it if you need it.
