Bryan,

Oils are one of those 'horses for courses' things.  However with the older motors, ie red and grey motors, the best oils seem to be the 20W-50 varieties, not the Kmart reconstituted stuff, but from known companies, eg Castrol, Mobil, Shell etc.  Really you can't go wrong, especially if you change at the recommended intervals, 6000 miles if I remember rightly!!

Bryan,

Try asking the oil companies. They all have Technical departments who would be more than happy to help.

TRY

www.shell.com.au
www.valvoline.com.au
www.castrol.com.au

Here is a list of Castrol oils including a description.

I have already sent an email to Valvoline so I'll let you know the response.

Hi Bryan,

Heres the answer from Valvoline. It also may be of assistance to other grey motor owners.

"The original GMH specification was API SD 10w/30.  As you can appreciate, there has been some changes since then.  I would recommend you use an API SF monograde 30 engine oil such as our Super HPO 30."

See http://www.eposode.com/fc%20test/1033.pdf for product details.

You will need the Acrobat viewer installed. You can get it for free from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html if necessary.

Cheers,

Craig.

If you use a single grade oil you should be matching it with leaded petrol. As this is no longer available you should use a good multigrade and change it every 1,000 miles.
