Guys Huh
I have bought an FC ute with a 202 motor, problem is that when ignition is turned off, the motor seams to splutter rattle and keep running for a few seconds untill it eventually dies with a last groul splutter and cough.
I have tried timing it, but refuses to run on the rikter scale . Is running currently way below top dead center.

Any thoughts on the matter?

vin   does it run ok if you adjust the timing , ignoring the timing marks... may be  the pully on the harmonic ballancer has spun

The outer pulley on the harmonic balancer has slipped. Wink

Hey
Checked the pulley, OK. Could it be that one of the valves be stuck or even a carbon build up inside the cylinder?

Vinnie,

You should manually time the engine by finding TDC on Cylinder No1 compression stroke. At this point the marks on the harmonic balancer and the timing cover should line up, and your points should also just be about to open with the rotor approaching the No1 plug lead. This will always get it close enough to get you running, and will not rely on the harmonic balancer being accurate.

If the timing is fairly close and you still get run on, its usually a sign of either excess cylinder heat which ignites unburnt fuel in the cylinder, excess carbon build up which similarly continues to burn leftover fuel after the ignition source is removed, low compression, or a combination of all three.

You could try to use one of the aftermarket engine decoke mixtures, I'm not sure if you can still get Redex but this was always very good at removing carbon build up.

Thanks Craig,
As i have tried spraying water down the carby to try and clean up the cylinder, slight improvement must be on the right track, will try running cooler plugs in the last attempt to try resolve the problem as i am planning to take the head offfor a better clean and thorough cleaning. Hope my effort will not be in vain.

Is it flooding after turning engine off?
Look down carby and see if fuel is dribbling down the throat.

Also is it idling too fast or the distributor base plate sticking causing the timing to advance?
Latter 202's (HX/Z) had a solenoid to close the throttle to prevent run on.

Hey
The run on was or as far as i know was that the engine was running a bit too hot. Changed the thermostat, flushed the system touch wood all is well for now.
