Finally broke with tradition and bought something that wasn't grey!



I purchased it in Port Macquarie, where it was obviously very happy and therefore reluctant to leave, as the ensuing trip to Sydney took 14 hours!

Personally, I would have put it on a trailer, but my good mate Chuck wouldn't have it, and to his credit used his bush mechanic's skills to get over a multitude of hurdles, including seized brakes, sloppy drag link, water in the fuel, even the broken 2-3 selector bracket in the column.



He was looking pretty cocky until it chewed up the timing gears. No cure for that in the bush!

Fortunately the city boy (me) was able to rustle up a tow vehicle and a car trailer at 10.00pm on a Saturday night.



We concluded a exciting, sometimes frustrating but overall enjoyable adventure at 3.30am, Sunday morning.

Awesome stuff mate ,I bet this car stays with you for a long long time.
And to think ,If all these things happened one by one spread out over a couple of weeks ,It would have just downright prissed you off and probably took away some of the cars value to you.
At least now you have one list to work through not a list that keeps fluctuating.

Looks good Eddie.
Can I interest you in a green or red.......this COLOUR thing may catch on.
It would seem that you crammed a years worth of niggly breakdowns into 1 adventure.

That's one way of looking at it I guess. At least it didn't happen out in the middle of nowhere on a cold rainy night......

Hang on a minute....that's exactly how it did happen!


Another way is at least I now know what a fibre timing gear sounds like in the 50km or so before it gives up the ghost.

It wasn't dodgey tappets after all!

Thanks Ace.

I actually went to Port Macquarie in the first place to check out the convertable.

After declining to buy it, I hired a car to drive back, as the next flight to Sydney was 3 hours away.

15 minutes out of town, and we pass the ute on the side of the road with a "For Sale" sign on it.

Couldn't believe it.

It's been sitting for a while, so has a few niggling problems, however it was restored in 1997, to a reasonably high standard, so a couple of weekends work should see it all sorted.

It's a bit tight in the shed at the moment.

However, there's a bloke I know who is maybe going to help me strip my parts car next weekend and hopefully take the shell away as well!

The specially tempered teeth, and a revised pitch enable them to cut through steel like butter. Wink

It was a succesful afternoon, Harko got his roof, and I got my "convertable" FC.

Gary, I'll check the wheel arch trims for you but I think they are beyond saving. We carefully took out the rear seat, which I think is pretty good if you are interested?

The ute project is getting much closer to being finished, with the next few weekends planned out to get it back on the road.

History:

After stripping the timing gear, things got a little out of hand.



Off came the subframe and drum front end.

The firewall was stripped to metal and repainted black, the subframe went to the powdercoaters for satin black, and a HR front end was prepared.



Heavy duty lowered coils were used, as well as new ball joints, pivot bushes etc.



Fast forward to last weekend:

All the front sheetmetal was picked up after being painted by Alfio from the NSW club.





It looks awesome. Unfortunatley it shall mean that the rest of the car will now have to be done! Wink

Finally, here is the motor. I've got a matching Klienig twin breather rocker cover to go on.

Looking great Ed.  Are the headers and manifold just polished or did you have them chromed?  If they are polished, what have you coated them with?
