Some more non FE FC pics from the National Archives site.

EH Holdens being loaded in SA. Sedans, a wagon and check out that panelvan in the background. The truck cab may have been a Bedford.

What colour would you like sir?
All the HR's appear to be of the LHD variety.
Wonder where they were off to! By the look of the boat, it may be Greece.

Heres a LHD HR Special. Only 1747 HR's were produced in LHD and most were standards as in the pics on the wharf that Alex posted This car now resides in SA

I remember reading somewhere during my appreticeship years that HR wagons were exported to South Africa fitted with a 253 V8 and Opel 4 speed gear box.
My boss at the time was surprised i found this info because not too many Mechanics knew of this at the time.
In the same book only Export HQ's had 138 red motors fitted, LC Torana motors i believe.

Further to the HQ 138 motor i am sure that HK/T/G models were fitted with a 138 export motor as well what a power house they would have been make the old grey seem like a Turbo!!!

The export HQs also had a 250ci Chev in-line 6 option, in a model called the "Kommando".  I agree the 138 red (2250) motor would have been an utter slug in a car that heavy - it was gutless enough in the Torana!

As far as the 253 HR goes, are you sure it wasn't a 283?  It just seems a bit unlikely, if only because the 253/308 donks weren't released in Australia until the very late 60s (HT? HG? thereabouts...).  So for it to be in an export model in 1966/67 does seem odd.  On the other hand a Chev 283 V8 could well be a possibility, especially in the context of the other Chev motor mentioned previously.  Small numbers of HRs were released here with the Opel box, too.

As always, happy to be corrected and learn something!

The HT HG export motor was a 130 ci red motor.

A couple of experimental (test mule) HRs were constructed with 283 motors in them, so South Africa would have seen 'production variants' of those.

The 253 V-8 was released in the HT range, somewhere around June or July 1969.  The 308 came out later, near the end of the HT model, perhaps in December 1969, hence the HT series having the largest engine range: 130 (export), 161L, 161H, 186L, 186H, 186S, 253L, 253H, 307, 308L, 308H, 350A, 350M.  All engines below the 350 could be ordered with 2, 3 or 4 speed transmissions.  The 350 came with a 2 speed automatic(Powerglide) or a 4 speed manual.  It was never offered with a 3 speed manual transmission.

Somewhere I have a full page newspaper advertisement extolling the virtues of the new 253 ci V-8.  When I find it again, I will scan & post it.

Thanks for the correction on the red motor export in the HKTG models what a powerhouse that would have been a 130!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I was told the 253 V8 HR export was a test mule before it was released here. Yes I'm positive i read 253 and not 283.
Is it normal to wait up to two years before its release in Australia?
