I have got an Fe/FC workshop manual, Its a bit grubby , But still very useful . Its actually the one I use in my garage..... I have one in every room of the house just for when something pops into my mind about fe or fc.... Any way I want $25 + postage for it........ Sorry my NOS one is not for sale .... CHEERS SLIM

This is MY spin on NOS.
New Old Stcok. Doesn't necessarily mean "In the box".
If it has never been fitted, it is NOS.
BUT, NOS also does not automatically means it is perfect. I have a NOS HR Dashboard on Ebay at the moment. That IS in the box, but it has some small bubbles in the chrome. It happens.
Technically, as soon as it is fitted, it is second hand. I have some kick plates that were NOS when I fitted them. Even though they were on the car for only 8 weeks & are still mint, the are now second hand. But, I have listed them as 2nd hand, but near NOS.
Poetic licence I suppose.
BUT, the most important thing to remember, is NOS does NOT always mean MINT. It can be pitted or shagged.

I agree with Rob.  If you can see marks where an item has been screwed into place, it ain't NOS.  New Old Stock doesn't have to have a box, but it means it has never been in a car.

I've got a set of FC scuff plates that are NOS.  Definitely never been fitted to a car (Trivia: they've got "Hillsdons" - Sydney Holden Dealer back in the day - written on the underside).  But they're discoloured and in no condition to put on a car.

By the same token I've fitted what was my NOS bonnet button on the Ol' Girl, only a matter of a couple of months ago.  Even though it is still perfect, I couldn't in good conscience still call it NOS.

And a book can be MINT or AS-NEW, but not NOS.  IMHO, anyway

Seriously, a car-part is either new and unused or it is used.  A book can be anywhere between mint condition and tattered/wrecked.  There is no absolute rule that says once a book has been cracked open it is no longer new.  You can use a book and have it continue to look as-new.  Of course the more use it gets, the harder it is to keep it looking as-new, particularly when you're up to your elbows in grease

But in any case, to my mind the definition of NOS is very narrow: "a genuine, original and unused part or accessory". Something in it's original packing is more likely to be NOS than something that isn't, but it's no guarantee either way.

I hope frogman got his manual OK, because this thread has well and truly drifted O/T

I have a few NOS car parts, they may be NIB but I would not fit them to my car, why you ask. I can buy a new item that is in far better condition and a hell of a lot cheaper.

I have seen and purchased N.O.S.I.B parts that I have used, why you ask, well in a nut shell they just do not make them like that these days.

So why do we search out and buy NOS parts:

1. Collectors
2. Restoration
3. Preservation.

For me I am looking for one in better condition than I all ready have.

I want 2 N.O.S.I.B Horn buttons and Grill Badge Inserts. One for the car and one for the display shelf.

Q. If I take them out of the box will they still be NOS. hehehe

Here's a slightly diiferent spin on collecting NOS parts.
I have found that a lot of NOS parts found in old dealerships are actually faulty - that's why they are there!

The dealership didn't / couldn't return them and there they sat, until snapped up by some body to resell at a swap meet or on ebay.

Some of these parts were either pitted or didn't fit right right from the start, promting the new term NGOS
(No good old stock)
