Hello, can u join by welding, Stainless steel to mild steel?

Eg I want to join a  stainless steel tube to my existing mild steel pipe on motorbike exhaust (to run a race can of course), but i want to weld these together.

Is it possible?

Using MIG with mild steel electrode.. or electrode which suits mild steel.

Cheers

Ed

doesnt have to be ultra tidy, it's just a bash about bike.

Hey Ed,

Give it a go on some scrap... See if that works. I thought that you had to use a special rod for stainless but am not sure.

I know with a stick welder you can weld mild steel with stainless rods but not the other way round. Not sure if  it's the same with a mig.

Ed
Have done it with Arc welding but never tried with mig. Have a crack and let us all in on the results. You need to use stainless wire/rod as mild will not take to stainless. Hope this is of some help.

Dont think I'll have to now.

Am putting a Yoshi pipe onto my KLE500.. the pipe is worth more than the bike!

anyway i am making a mild steel adaptor to use.

so no need to weld.

Gday ED ...yep you  CAN weld mild steel to stainless using the mig with no problems . I have done this numerous times in the past with items like stainless catches on pick up beds that are of course mild steel. So no need to panic. Stainless steel has a high content of regular steel in it... its still called steel remember...  Cheers streetneat Cool
