Hi there,
Can some one please give me some advice on the rear spring rubber mounting pads.

I have a new set from rare spares and when I went to fitt them Sunday I noticed that the line in the rubber where the spring seats is off set (one side of the raised lip is thicker than the other) since my pads are worn out I can not tell which way round they go.

Dose the thick edge face the wheel or to the diff centre ?

It is not shown in any manuals that I have on HR or FE/FC.

A photo below to show what I mean.
(Its a HR diff housing)

Any help please !!!!

im not positive but i seem to remember last set i replaced were even,if im right then your rare spares set have been cut wrong, hopefully someone else knows for sure.

I am on my second set of saddle rubbers and honestly can not remember any difference in them, I just fitted to the spring and retainer and bolted up. Huh Huh
Going by the picture it looks as if the mold was having a bad hair day as two of the bolts are almost in the waffle section.

Hi guys,
Steve I just had a look at my nos saddle rubbers and the lips on them are even so I'd have to agree with Nicko and John. just a bad casting on yours.  Mind you they would still do the job.

Hi Mick,

I went back to R/S in Preston (Melb) with the saddle rubbers today and the staff were very helpfull they checked the rubbers against about 20 they had in stock and a few pre-packed kits and they where all the same shape. Unless there mold is out of shape I just dont know.
So I have kept my set and will try fitting them up this week, can only hope they fit in ok.

Digger This is the picture off RS site for FC rear pads, looks even to me

One other thing going by your picture and what is on the RS site (Melbourne) you have FC saddle rubbers,HR saddle rubbers are different and they have a different picture on their site, my memory wont work and I can not remember what the last ones looked like that I put in. The HR rubber has no bolt indents on the side in their picture and this makes sense as the HR rubbers are enclosed by there retainers, FC needs indents to clear the U Bolts.

Gee Thanks again John,

When I was at R/S today we did match up the rubbers against the FC one's and the FC looked the part ie:spring area of pad central and the right size for the spring but looked to narrow for the HR mounts and they did have the cut away for the u-bolts. Looked the same as in the FC parts book.
Then again by using the HR rubbers they will fit the HR mount but the where the spring sits is to wide !!  Huh

Starting to wish I had not unbolted the springs  :-/ :-/

I used HR rubbers with the HR diff, no dramas Spring width does not seem to bother installation once all the bolts are tightened up they just sandwiched the spring.

Thanks John,

I'm using 5 leave springs out of a Business sedan and have fitted 1 1/2'' lowering blocks to bring the ride hight back down and I had to use "u" bolts to fix together, I did not like the idea of using longer bolts for the saddles.
Do you think the blocks will cause any prob's with the rubbers.

Thanks for everyone's help.

I have finely found the right spring pad rubbers. a guy at Rare Spares sussed them out for me yesterday.

If it helps someone here is the part number.
Rare Spares part No: HD-HG Ute & Van SPK-5.
Part Number stamped on pads - No: 7427212
(To fitt FE-FC with HR diff housing and mounting plates)

To the best of my knowledge these rubbers we found in the boot of the wifes FC project are HR rubbers with out the pressed steel plates that go around them b4 fitting into the car. The car has got a HR diff fitted and this was as far as they got with modifications . The diff was put under the car to make it mobile I suspect. So what  are these rubbers? Huh Cheers streetneat....
