Hey guys,

My brother and I have been old Holden fans for years (the family has had an FB on the road for 35 years) and have finally decided to restore an FE Holden standard sedan.  The choice of a standard was because it seem theres not many about and they are therefore something 'different'.  We came across a 56 model built in Melbourne and that was originally 'Breton Blue' with a comet blue interior.  My question is, does anybody know of a site or somewhere where I can get info or pictures of EXACTLY what was original equipment on a 'standard' sedan? this is due to a previous restorer adding lots of chrome, radio antennas and bits that seem to be off a special.

first join the forum, then look up fe_standard_wagon and send him a PM or email, if not I am sure the guys and girls will be quite happy to set you in the right direction.

Hi Nige,
If you can give us the ID details of your car: plate, chassis and original engine number, we should be able to give you the build date and how the vehicle was in its original build condition (except for dealer fitted extra's).  
Over the production run quite a few changes were made, so it depends on when and where your car was finally assembled as to how it was factory finished.

Thanks Guys,

Being absolute amateurs when it comes to car restoration (although I have been an Army mechanic for 17 yrs) Dave and I have a zillion questions relating to everything.  We will apply to join the Vic or NSW car club as I figure going and looking at some of the different styles and talking to the experts has to help, do you guys know of anything in the Albury/Wodonga area?

Ken is your best bet, but you could also contact Leon from the NSW Club. He has a restored FE Standard Sedan as shown below.

Thanks for your offer too Ken, as the questions sort themselves in our heads I will pick your brains for answers.  From what I can gather (from scanning the forum) you collect or keep track of FE -FC serial numbers etc.  The one we just bought has the following:

FE - 215 - 2968M
Trim - 16 - 674
Paint - 253 - 7447

Chassis - 7 32339 M

I also have two grey motors but neither of them seem to be from this car:

L564344
L637730

They are 375 cars apart off the production line.  If you can find out which of the grey motors is the original, then you'll know approximately the build month.  When you find out, then I'll know mine as my car has a red motor.

Nigel,

Both Engines are not original.
The Engine Build dates are (approx):-
  L564344   : 9/5/1959
  L637730   : 3/12/1959

As 'spinner' notes your car and his car were built at similiar times, maybe November - December 1957.
This means that the original engine number would be in the range L 400000 to L 420000

Keep looking, you may find the original block nearby!

That is interesting.  I have no idea where the car came from originally, except for the fact that I recently picked it up in Albury.  Some boy racers have had a go at an extremely bodgy restoration.  Things like FC grille, every piece of chrome crap you can think of and some really dodgy rust repairs around the sills as well as mags and a sports wheel.  As Geoff mentioned the engine currently in it is from 59 as is the sparey (according to the tech help calculator thingy).  It would be nice to find the original engine but I don't think it will happen.
