Hey Guys,
Now that we've got all that Emu vs Kiwi stuff outa the way, here's one for u Gurus (no need to reply Kiwi!) oops.... slipped out.
My FC wagon, "Hilda", has the orig. 132 ish grey. I have added a twin Stromberg set up and extractors. My head gasket has blown so I am going to get the head dealt with while it is off. I want to do the hardened valve thing. I'd like to get a bit more performance out of the old girl, so what recommendations do we have out there for shaving and port size etc?
Thanks guys
Emu, shaver of heads

HEy Emu,
I was chatting with a colleague who used to hot up greys, and he told me, all he would do is get the die grinder out and go as far he could into the port. if he broke thru to the water jacket, then he just grabbed another..
I know there's more science to it, but wouldnt you love to have all this gear at your disposal!
theres plenty of ppl here who know more on your topic.. im not one of 'em!
oh.. hardened exhaust valve seats for ULP is what u need.
Cheers
Ed

ive had a few with worked heads and the best was fitted with 179valves and ports opened up to roughly a third bigger with my die grinder(no polishing)and 20thou shaved off head,it went hard ,but these days you would have to run premium unleaded in any motor for best performance.

Hi Emu, The hot grey I ran in my wagon had just about everything done to the head - Chev valves, dbl springs, hard seats, combustion chambers re-worked and the ports were taken out to the limits. However it wasn't shaved a lot so it could run normal unleaded. It pushed the wagon along (and sounded better) than the red I replaced it with. One major thing I think should be considered is - before any port work is done, you should drill the head & manifold and fit locating pins. Once the ports are done it's a bitch to get the inlets lined up again. If they're not properly matched, it's a waste of time doing the work at all. cheers, Leigh

i had no trouble with lining it up,as before i started grinding i put some paint on manifold and bolted it up then when i pulled it apart there was the paint mark showing around outside edges of ports to give me my outer limits of where to grind
