Phantom,

The splines on the inside of the handle, or on the shaft of the window/door mechanisms are most probably worn. They are held on by a small "c" clip which can be easily removed with a tool available very cheaply from most auto parts places. You can buy the door handles new (repro's) but the winder mechanisms will need 2nd hand replacements if they are buggered.

Cheers,

Craig.

Hi there Phantom,
you say a new board was added before you bought the car.
Maybe the new door trim board is thicker than original, and any foam also used, makes up a few  millimetres and not allowing the splines to make full contact,
as you mentioned if you push hard the door will open.
You should  check that, and not assume the handle is worn.

Nope, the handle is stuffed.  Once the clip engages in the internal mechanism, the handle is in place, regardless of how thick the panel is.  If the panel is too thick the clip wont engage.
What you describe as happening is classic text book stuffed handles.
Like Slim - I have lots of these handles and I am in Vic.
