Reverse mounted wiper motor

Hello,

Once again I am contemplating another modification to keep me occupied.. and distracted from the primary objective  

From all my research, reverse mounting a wiper motor adds up to a be a real pain in the arse, so before (and if) I embark on this I just wanted to maybe get some ideas off some of you.

I thought of mounting the motor directly inverse to its current position using a plate spaced out to allow for the wiper arms to work.

The only concern here being not to interfer with the action of the cowl vent.

1) By reversing the mounting position of the motor, the direction of  rotation of the arm would change, although I'm not sure if this would have any effect on the resultant action of the wiper arms on the screen.

2) Following on from 1) Would this cause my wipers to park in strange poistions on the windscreen?

any thoughts would be apprecaited

I take it the aim of this madness is to conceal the wiper motor?

Maybe you could talk to Ken about whether he could make you one of his 1-speed -> 2-speed conversions that would do what you require?  Otherwise, maybe you could knock up some sort of chain-drive or crown-wheel arrangement to keep the orientation of the wiper motor the same, but locate it behind the firewall?

If the aim isn't concealment, then (a) WTF and (b) haven't you got enough on your plate already?

Hi Ed,
1. Reverse mounting the motor should not affect the action of the wiper arms on the screen.
2.You can adjust or modify the park positions on most wiper motors.(What wiper motor are you using)
You'll have to check if the wiper motor interferes with the cowl vent etc yourself. Theres not much room if you are going to fit a radio and speaker etc in their original positions.

Many years ago when I had my first FC and got sick of the vacuum wipers, I converted a wiper from a 1958 Morris Minor. These have a remote motor and mount under the dash, fom memory I had to make a few small mods, but as far as I can remember it all cleared the vent. I know there are few  Morris Minors around now, but I believe you can buy the same type of set-up for street rods.

Hi Ed,
The motor used in many 2 speed conversions is one from an XP Falcon. The motor when in the Falcon is mounted in reverse position to an FC so you might even be able to use the brackets from that. Go along to a wreckers and stick your head under the dash of an XP and you might get some ideas on what needs to be done.
Be sure to wipe your feet and hands afterward tho' so you don't spread F**D germs on your Holden.

THe aim of my madness here is concealment   which still has a dash of part a) of your reply and probably more of part b).  Years ago I obtained a XM or is it P )on Kens advice (I think this was my very first post!), wiper motor (blue preslite, very similar to EH wiper motor), it will bolt straight in using the EK base plate, but I thought I would try and be clever and hide it.

Thanks for the tip on adjusting park positions.. How do u do this?
I am not planning on using factory locations for either radio or speaker, this has allowed me to entertain the idea of reverse mounting the wiper motor.  I have a sneaky location planned for a radio one day (more on this later) however am still working on the car in which to house a radio.

The morris idea has got me listening.  These must also be 2 speed if rodders are using them right?
The remote nature of the set up would allow a less bulky mount then the one I had planned.  There is a morry specialist in North Rocks, I may go and talk to them.

Hi Ed,
I was going to mention the Morris Minor wiper motor set up. I saw one years ago fitted to a FC, the motor sat on top of the glovebox from memory. To make the MM 2 speed just fit a Resistor or wiper dwell control.
If you're going to use a Preslite wiper motor the easiest way to adjust the park position would be to modify the masterspline on the crank arm.

Just had a chat with a friend who rebuilds all things British.  He reckons the Austin 1800 wiper motor may also be worth a shot too.

I'm guessing a resistor would drop the voltage causing the motor to slow down for that second "Slow" speed.

For regulation sake, the requirements are 45 cycles per minute (fast speed) and 20 cycles per minute (slow speed) or if it is over 45cpm single speed is ok.

question. How would you speed up a wiper motor if required?? or do these old motors act pretty fast?

Does anybody honestly think the rego/engineer guys are going to examine the wiper speeds anyway??

Hi Ed, I sent you a photo of vb commadore wiper setup in my fc ute. This wiper motor should plug straight into vn wiring and will be concealed under the dash. If you want more details and photos of the modifications I can do them on the weekend for you. Hope this helps, Peter.

looks like it would function beautifully and be concealed nicely, but I personally love the original action of the wipers and although I want a concealed motor, wouldn't trade off the original action for anything.

Are the motors in the Morrie's in the paddock 2 speed or single speed - I am looking for some Morris/Austin 2 speed remote drive wiper motors for a hot rod.  Problem with hot rods is that the wipers mount on the roof and there is no room for a wiper motor up there.
I am prepared to pay quite well for complete 2 speed units.
