Was using the car as my daily until a few weeks ago when we were going to put a new seal & gasket kit through the motor as the rear main was leaking quite bad from sitting around for 10 years with minimal use.

Motor out and found we had a faulty water pump and broken thermostat housing so decided to pull the motor down to be safe.  Turns out it had never been opened and in amazing condition.

Motor is currently with the machine shop and he was shocked that it had never been opened and all as it was from factory including the plastic timing gears.

It’s getting a quick once over and will be rebuilt to  XU1 spec with the head tickled and will try and source a 390 Holley set up for it.

In the mean time I’m I’m tidying up the engine bay and a few small areas on the car during this isolation & unemployment period so I don’t go stir crazy!!!

Before shot:

Quick elbow grease clean:

Not sure if I want to open the can of worms and cut the small sections of rust out of the guards & doors or just leave it be for now.

Need to replace all door seals and belts, front & rear glass rubbers, boot & bonnet seals etc

Interior needs some love and have already started tidying up the wiring harness and need to work out why the speedo stopped working just before I pulled it off the road.

I will make sure I update with more progress shots soon.

Just a quick tidy-up?

I'm willing to bet it'll turn into a paint job.

No paint job, just a tidy up.  If I repaint the car it defeats the purpose of keeping it a little old & ratty as it currently sits.

No point going to crazy with mods/upgrades as id more than likely have to then have it engineered and defeats the purpose of what I’m trying to achieve with it.

You going to bring the chrome back or too far gone? They’ll be tight but look nice.

Chrome is too far gone sadly so will get them blasted/cleaned up and a lick of paint/clear and they will do the job for now.

I got a lead on a pair of 13” dress rings today so hopefully it comes good.

A little over 6 months and we have some progress again with the motor starting to take shape.

I think my daughter will be an only child... 🤣

Motor should hopefully be back together next week ready to test fit and then tackle the wiring mess under the bonnet along with a few other items that need some TLC.

For a “bolt on” part these manifolds are bloody terrible.  Lots of work to get these to slip on & off and be able to nip up a bolt.

Quite poor for something that isn’t exactly “cheap”

A very neat-looking setup.

But I'm curious about the red-motor-mounted, disc-braked FJ front suspension in the background.

Things have been a little slow with progress due to life getting in the way but decided to have another crack and get it back on the road for summer festivities.

Firewall notched:

One lick of primer:

All wiring finished, cam run in and carbs are set.

Just have to sort out a pedal/throttle cable set up and it’s back on the road 😈
