How do all.

out of all the current relatively cheap and available 4spd gearboxes, which is best? I've seen people refer to an m20, m21? I've seen a Datsun 4spd for sale as well to suit ealy holden setup, i know they can take a bit of punishment, rallying my mates 1600 through a large number of paddocks back over at Yorke peninsula.

I used to have Datto 1600 4-speed in Faecal.  They go reasonably hard, but chew through clutches like nobody's business.  You need a Holden pressure plate and a Datsun clutch, and from memory the 180B clutch-plate is the only one that fits.  You can imagine how much punishment they can take Roll Eyes  I went through 5 clutches in 4 years, and wasn't that hard on them Wink

I changed from 2nd to 3rd one day on a club run, heading up Pennant Hills Road, and the car screetched to a stop, feeling like it had just folded in half with the back wheels touching the front ones!  Turned out the main shaft just snapped.  "Lucky those gears are in a box" and all that.  It was hello NRMA and hello tow-truck.  That's when I put the Powerglide in.  Can't kill those things without an axe.

The benefit of the 1600 box is that it fits under the standard FE/FC transmission tunnel, but you still need to have a rear mount made up IIRC.  There was a lot of silly buggers with the slave cylinder setup too.

Hope that helps,

Spinach
I had in the now defunct white Effie(Rust),the M20 /21(One of these refers to the six cylinder box and one to eight, can't remember which) Holden Depress four speed, used a Dellow bellhousing which allowed fitment straight up to the grey motor with side mounts etc. Split the transmission tunnel to fit all the good fun as talked about in other posts on this site.

I still have the complete system sitting on the garage floor awaiting the next victim. Smiley

Suggest doing a search in this section for gearboxs.

Good Luck
