I'm wondering where people can recommend to have things rechromed.
Initially in WA, but willing to send bulk lots over east if this is a significantly better option.

I couldn't fault Modern Plating in Oakleigh Vic.
Just allow a couple of months as they are very busy.

Hey all,

A pretty green FC restorer here, also looking for advice on re-chroming in W.A.

Before I drag all my chrome into a shop and get an official quote, does anyone have a general, ball park figure on what re-chroming is worth? Perhaps just an idea of what a bumper would be worth to do, just so I can get a rough idea.

All the chrome for an FC Standard sedan (mind you) came to about $5000, seven years ago.

From memory, a bumper section was about $160, and an overrider was about $100.  Essentially $700 for a front bumper, $800 for a rear bumper.

I think you could make that $1000 a bar in today's money.
What you do have to worry about though is die cast.
Get your potential chrome plater to show you some die cast they have done or alternatively you will need a recommendation from someone who has had die cast done there.

This is a much harder area to get right. You will get better results by buying the best condition pieces you can find - that is, with the least pitting. Don't just give the plater an ordinary headlight rim for example with pitting across the top. Find one with no pitting across the top and as least as possible under the top edge.
Buy the new repro door handles. They are worth the money.
You need the best headlight and tail light rims you can find, the best front Parker surrounds, the best boot lock surround (same as FE special or standard) and the best grille upper left and right surrounds.

I hate to say it but with some of the figures I have heard for chroming in WA it may be better to buy re-chromed from Ebay.

I have not seen the quality of these items maybe somebody else has.

We now that a lot of Ebay pricing seems to be inflated these days but with the waiting time and cost it may be the way to go especially if you are missing some.

 Just a word of warning with die-cast.  Don't get sucked in with "electro-forming". If you don't know what that is... that's a blessing!  Rare spares in Qld. sends chrome to somewhere in Vic. As Ken suggests, take the time to source the best die-cast pieces you can.  This avoids trying to chase out pitting. Cheers old-blu.

I agree with ken and old blu re the die cast I have found that the ute parts that were originally painted not chromed seem not to pit like the chromed pieces at least that is what I have found, the painted pieces I have are in excellent condition.

I had mint painted die cast i bead blasted file finished got them perfect for chrome.
Now they are full of blisters and bubbles horrible finish so disheartning vinneys get a big fat 0 from me everything has blisters or crap finish.

All the supplied parts were no pitted really good useable chrome..
