Hi. I am wondering if this is a standard fitment radio bracket that mounted upwards into where the radio blank is? Or should I say, a typical period bracket as I know no fc's had them from the factory. It's to mount something under where a radio would go. This is from a taxi so feel free to send it in a pm to other taxi owners

That bracket is typical of the one used by Air Chief on their transistorised radios for the FC.

Ok. The only thing is that I can tell that the bung or blank on the taxi was painted the same time as the black on the rest of the car. So it was a taxi with no seat belts or radio but I think this has to be the bracket for the taxi meter or change box then. Makes sense that it was used where it's easier to bolt on. Thanks for identifying it.

Added: while your there, see the depression and rust where the taxi sign was. Also, the round hole has the bung in the same paint and I'm wondering if the radio guys can identify the four screw hole one. I'm assuming this is the taxi one. Apparently bushy type blokes preferred transistor radios in cars. So, I thought these features might be of interest cos there's not many original taxis around

I agree the weird shaped hole is for the two way aerial. The round hole would be for a radio. What makes you think that a taxi would not have a radio fitted?

Post a photo of the firewall area and you should be able to see lots of locating screw holes identifying where the two way radio was mounted.

Thanks fellas. Yeah I tried to get a good pic of holes but it's pretty hard to with black and grey specs. We are gunna blast it in the morning so I'll do it in bare metal or primer. I stripped the subframe to blast it too. It's definitely not a rust repair the sway bar one, it's like you said, drilled the same diameter as the hole. I'm still keen to see if it's been brazed etc. I just ran out of light but got it all done today. Can't wait til tomorrow. Oh, the reason I said about the radio is because the paint on the bung was like it was part of the original paint. But I'll know if there is no usual support holes I suppose.

Dean. The rust is on the bolt, not the subframe.
In the original installation the thread of the bolt extends inside the subframe about 10 mm and the exposed thread attracts rust, when someone goes to undo the bolt, the threads tighten up in the captive nut causing the bolt to break. There is usually no sign of rust in the subframe near the bolt.

Yep Ken you are right. I saw it mentioned about rust somewhere though.

I rattle gunned out the good one but it was tight and can see the thread has been compromised. So your theory is supported. So what I will do is remanufactured this area with perhaps a tubular thread that matches the bolt length. Is that the usual fix. What other ideas if I open it up. It's gotta be repaired anyway. We remanufactured this area on the other car and strengthened the front by sleeving inside and gusseted some spots but I must document this properly as my memory is likely to forget lol.
