hello, I have a Bosch 08/12 R37 starter.  Can anyone tell me a place of certain purchase of brushes and bushes, or, the specifications of the same that I might order similar, or, if another model is known to have suitable replacement components.  Thank you.

Rodger,

I don't know the Holden part number for the Bosch starter brushes.  The generic part number is BSX43.  Believe it or not, Bosch still lists them as a "fast-moving spare part", and the Bosch part number is 1 107 014 110.  But when I called Bosch Australia, they said, "We'd have to order them from Germany, and it'd take about a month."

Ingram sells compatible replacement brushes, but they don't have the tag on the end of the lead.  Your local auto electrician should have them.  When replacing the brushes, you'd need to salvage the tags off the old brushes, and solder them onto the leads of the new brushes.

I find that the armature bushes just don't wear out.  The only other thing you need to do is true up the commutator and undercut the segments (apart from checking the armature for shorts with a growler).  If there are no burnt commutator segments, you can generally assume that the armature's in good order.

Is the R37 the FB-EJ four-brush starter?  These are the best ones to use.

Thank you Rob.  Have the brushes now (with tags).  Had been finding the bushes hard to access.  I'll return to look at them again as I was told they needed replacing.  Thank you for the other tips.  Rodger
