In factory original FE/FCs that had the taillight red lense wired as both brake and indicator, what was the Amber/White lense used for?

I think the FE and Early FC's had clear lower lenses that where mainly used for the reverse lights, the late 59 FC's had the amber lense as the reverse in place of the clear lense.

I think the lens in the lower section just covered an unused space in a lot of the earlier models, with a round punch out blank behind the lens where a bulb could be mounted later. I believe FCs had factory wiring installed for reversing lights, in readiness for the option to be installed using a clear lens. Late FCs had separate indicators behind an amber lens. Don't know of any use for the lower tail light section in the FE.

Jim's right they were used for reverse lights.
You could buy a reversing light kit genuine, all early brake light/indicator looms have an extra green wire in the boot right hand side quarter panel and right side under dash. Kit consisted of two light sockets and globe, wiring loom in green and orange wiring and switch for the steering column, activated by the reverse gear linkage.
