G'day All

Does anyone know where I can buy a red motor waterpump with the cast impellor??

Replacement pumps with the pressed steel impellor (eg - 'GMB' etc) are easy to get, but I'd prefer one with the cast impellor but can't find one  Undecided

Jack i might be wrong but i beleive only genuine Holden water pumps were cast. The others are s**t.

G'day Jack   I've got a nos genuine water pump, I got it for my HK but it has the large snout on it, so fits from HT onwards (and LC LJ Toranas). I presume it has the cast impellor. I got it of a bloke at work who bought it in 73 for his LC Torana but never fitted it. It has HOLDEN cast in the housing. I gave him $50 for it so you wanted it you could have it for that (plus postage)     Dave

PM sent (and if it's got a cast impellor, I've beaten FC427s 2 year chase by about 1 1/2 years!)

Brett, I agree - I've never had much luck with any non-genuine pump; they dont last long (my current one is 2 years and 9000 km old; it's on the way out; starting to drip...)
Some say the genuine ones shift more coolant at low revs, and an old bloke (!!) who used to race red motors swears the pressed steel impellor pumps use almost half a HP more than the genuine article - he tested both consecutively on a dyno...

Checked out R & E Auto Parts - they say the Tru-Flow pumps are actually GMB brand and have pressed steel impellors  :' ( however they do have a few old stock WP814's (large hub, long shaft AFAIK) to fit red/blue/black with cast impellors for $38 if anyone is interested...)

For what it's worth, I've found there are 4 different waterpumps that all fit red/blue/black -

WP587 EH - HK, also LC XU1 (small hub, short shaft)

WP726 HT - HZ (and some VB?) (large hub, short shaft)

WP814 VB - VC (large hub, long shaft)

WP815 VH - VK ('jumbo pump', large bearings; sticks out approx 100mm from block, large hub)

The 'Tru-flow' (read 'GMB') pumps are all available for $23.36 plus postage (except the 'jumbo' - $44.24)

Short or long shaft depends on viscous or fixed fan, and whether A/C is fitted, small hub has mounting bolts approx 44mm centre of hole thru centre of hub to centre of opposite hole (PCD); large hub has ditto measurement approx 54mm...
Small hub and large hub fixed or viscous fans are obviously not interchangeable, neither are the hubs...

LC, LJ and UC Toranas use either WP587 or WP 726?

I may have got some of this wrong; any comments/corrections welcomed  Smiley

(and I'm still looking for a WP587 with a cast impellor  Undecided)

 Hi Jack, i did chase up new some old stock cast impellers from a mate, but assumed you had found one. I will give him a call and see what sizes he has.

Probably worth adding just why I've been checking out the various red/blue/black waterpumps (other than the fact that mine is on the way out); I have very little space between the waterpump hub/drive pulley and the radiator (3.3 block, custom alloy radiator, thermo fan mounted astern of radiator, no engine-driven fan) and wondered if any of these pumps would provide more clearance that the WP587 I've currently got fitted...

They don't...  Sad

With the appropriate pulleys fitted, WP587 is the "narrowest", WP726 is about 5mm more, then WP814 (apparently only because of the longer shaft - which could probably be shortened if you're not running an engine-driven fan or A/C) and lastly WP815 ("jumbo pump") which is much more...

Which gives rise to another interesting question - is there any difference in the amount of coolant these pumps shift?? WP587 appears to run a smaller OD pulley (haven't actually measured this yet) and should therefore spin faster than the others at same eng. revs...
Does the 'jumbo' shift more water or does the name refer only to the bearings and overall size?

Anyone got any info on this??

Jack, given your space restrictions, have you thought about an electric water pump? I haven't seen them myself, but may be worth looking into?

Definitely an option, Col. I've shifted the radiator as far forward as practical, and using a W587 waterpump gives me just enough room to change a belt - but only with a lot of pushing, prodding and flexing of the thermo fan shroud... Still, it can be done on the run if I ever blow a belt, so it's OK. Just investigated other waterpumps in the hope that one of them may allow that extra mm or 2...    not so unfortunately.

The car still runs very hot in low speed stop/start traffic conditions on hot days (fine otherwise) hence my desire to get a pump with a cast impellor - I've had much more success with these in the past, but they seem to be a thing of the past now...  Sad

Given that most of my driving is NOT in cities and I live in a cold part of the country, it's not really such a big issue; just a pedantic owner trying to make small improvements  Roll Eyes

Is it an aftermarket flex fan or stock ?

The aftermarket ones are normally poor performers..

Maybe go down the thermo route with a shroud and a big thermo?

Pete, no engine-driven fan of any description fitted. But largest possible thermo fan (in shroud, rear of radiator) is...

And Dean; some young whipper snapper in a blue suit and a funny hat driving one of them newfandangled lairy cars that all the young hoons drive (sorry, Pete - not you) with all them fancy blue and red lights recently pulled me up and told me I was already driving FAR TOO FAST...
He reckoned this would cost me a fair wad of money (nearly a fortnights old age pension!)  Shocked Shocked

I was inclined to tell him to shit in his hands and clap, but he was wearing a gun and was already pretty upset...

So thanks for your advice, but they wont give me an advance on my pension, so I'll actually have to drive slower...
