Hi all,

I have recently purchased my first ever FC Holden sedan and this will be my first ever attempt at a project car.  The car requires a lot of attention all over to ever see the road again but I'm hoping with the help of this forum and its members I will be able to have ago myself rather than paying someone.

The shell itself requires rust repair and panel work for what will end up a complete respray/colour change.  It came with no drive train and missing many parts, the wiring is a complete mess with parts chopped out and the rest chewed by rats.  It still has the roof lining but in poor condition and missing the rest of the interior.

My questions are as follows:

  • Where is the best place to source rust repair panels?
  • I need to replace all the rubbers, can I buy a complete kit and if so where from or are they only available individually?
  • Can I buy a replacement wiring harness or should I get one made up by a local auto electrician?
  • Is Ebay the best place to source parts like indicators & lights, chrome moldings, engine parts etc?
  • Recommendations for best set up (front end, rear end, suspension) If I'm to be running a Holden 6?[/li}

I have so many more questions but I don't want to bombard everyone all at once but I do appreciate any advice or information that will help me resurrect this rusty old pile of metal back to its former glory.

    Regards

    Bj

Go to: http://fefcholden.org.au/forum/index.php/board,37.0.html and read the many restoration projects on this Forum.

Hi Bj
Welcome to the forum
You cannot go wrong with redmr2red's advice.
I have spent hours trolling through previous restorations.
Fink is right also in that you should join your state fc club!
There is always someone who can source some parts for you.... Just ask in parts wanted. eBay is ok but you will pay through the nose for some items and others are a bargain.... Ask first in the forum as to what parts usually go for! You will quickly get an idea of what parts are worth!
Rust repair panels are available, rares do a couple of sections just depends on what you want. Sills do become available from time to time NOS are very pricey but you can sometimes pick up some old rare spares sills.
Rares also do a complete rubber kit as does obsolete rubbers. Again use the search engine for specific questions on parts. The forum is the best and the members are more than helpful.
Some one will have a wiring harness. I have bought one on the forum from Ken ( mcl1959) but read the blogs on getting one already made up.... I forget the company name.... Vintage harness' or something like that.
You'll get lots of advice re set up from others on the forum with much more experience than I have... I know you have different laws in different states. I'm going standard setup so keeping it simple.
Post some pictures in project cars and away you go....
Good luck
Nick

G'day Biggles,

You will find this site to an enormous help to you - the best car site on the web by a long way.  Advice is plentiful, and the members are only to willing to help.  I am in Ballarat, Vic so if you are nearby and want to call in anytime and see what I have been up to with my wagon, let me know.

Cheers, Graeme

Thanks for the welcome and replies fellas, I have been reading the forum for a few weeks now especially the Under Construction section but having to go through every thread and post does take time and I've noticed that there is vary rarely mention on where parts had been sourced/purchased.

I have tried searching but I'm obviously doing it wrong as I never seem to be able to find what I want Huh

I will continue to read the forum to hopefully seek the answers I require to help me with my first ever project car.

Hi Biggles,

Also you can try Gumtree and Trading post, good things turn up time and again. And If you find time go to swap meets and watch for garage sales with car parts, you will be surprised what you will find.

Hi Andy,

I have been searching online for parts: Ebay, Gumtree etc but there is rarely anything available in my area (Tasmania) and again I'm not aware of any swap meets here that are a regular event.

I have managed to find quite a few items I require on Ebay and currently waiting to hear back from the sellers in regards to postage costs so hopefully I wont have to remortgage the house.

Hey BJ
There is a club in Tas, and they will be hosting 100+(?) FE FC's at the next Nationals.
Might I suggest you start a thread about your car with pics in the under construction section, keep us up to date regarding what you are doing, and ask questions relating to the next job. Don't forget to share the results as you go.
Good luck.

specific questions - Rare Spares have rust repair panels as does a company in Qld whose name escapes me at the moment
Rubber kits are also available through Rare Spares
Wiring harnesses are available as well - Vintage Wiring looms I think - I had a look at their stand at Bendigo swap - very nice product.
Ebay is OK but sometimes pricey - the forum is a good source
I assume you mean red 6 not V6.
HR front end is usually the go with any red gearbox or auto you like - depending on whether you want to modify the floor. HR rear end mates up easily.
V6 engine is also popular and has a kit style conversion and is a little more pricey

Welcome to the forum and best of luck
