I am cleaning up the fuel tank for painting and reinstalling.  My tank looks like it was painted black and then sprayed with with a bituminous coating similar to that under the rear guards.  The tank had a thick sealing of mastic between it and the body.  Is this correct or has this been done during it's lifetime.  What do other people do with their tanks.

Thanks
Keith

Keith unless the car was sprayed totally underneath with a bituminous compound then the tank was originally finished in a tin plate colour similar to the brake and clutch fluid reservoirs. It very quickly corroded to a dull metal colour. The underbody proof coat was a NASCO accessory often seen in business sedans and other fleet cars.
