Vibration

 I have just fitted a 3.55 diff centre to my car, relaced the rear uni & used an old tailshaft that I had in stock.

My dilema being that the car has developed a vibration. I am hoping that the tailshaft is just out of balance & if I put the old one back in it will be right. If that doesn't fix it what are some other things to look for that could cause a vibration?

You need to know
1. if it is definitely in the rear
2. if it is there always or only on acceleration or deceleration.

it's sometimes enough to put a wheel back on , not on the same wheel stud location, to make a vibe.

in addition to what gwuthie said,

does it develop at a certain speed or revs?
if you put it in neutral when the vibration occurs does it disappear?

I once had a vibration that turned out to be misalignment of the pinion and gearbox angles.. fixed by shimming the box to the correct height.
Worn saddle / spring rubbers could cause this however, while this is possible it is probably unlikely in your case.

I would try changing the tailshaft back to your previous one.

Dean if you used the early type of uni joint make sure sure it is seated properely sometimes they get caught on the lip and sit crooked, otherwise it is most likely to be the tailshaft, if your old one was good whack it back in, have you managed to find a good gearbox yet?

Thanks for the input guys, it looks like the unis were put in too tight (don't know who would of done that ).

I will be putting the old tailshaft back in as well. There was a noise as well & it appears to be wheel bearings.

Pedro I have found a gearbox & it is on its way from Canberra, it has been rebuilt by a gent who builds gearboxes for historic race cars.(that alone should give me an extra 10mph ).
