I don't know if there is a difference between diff housing to spring rubbers between FC and HR, I am using a HR diff, are the FC and HR diff rubbers the same where they mount to the springs? Secondly, are rear spring centrebolts available from Rares?

That would explain the wear in the diff housing and the broken centrebolts....

Hi Keith. I used a lc/lj torana housing in one of my fc's. I think there about 3 inches narrower. which was good to fit the 245/60 tyres. I used the hr mounts and can remember having a bit of trouble with the mounts jumping over locating pins on the springs. If i was going to do it again i think i would do it differently. I dont know how but maybe you could try one the diff places they should know how to mount it so it wont move.            regards Chris.

anyone can ask a diff place and get a bunch of assumed knowledge.
on this here forum we get real answers from real people ,
who have seen or been through most probs a novice will encounter on these cars.

I have fitted Torana LC LJ, Commodore , Centura and 9"  to FC's and have always thrown away all the rubber insulators between the spring and the diff, made new diff saddles and used U bolts and never had a problem jumping center bolts or worn out rubber  insulators .......FC427.......

Sorry i thought thats what i was doing. Giving a little bit of advice. Dont use the hr mounts. maybe try the lc/lj diff. I dont know if Effcee can weld or fabricate. Not everyone can make the saddles. Then weld them on. With the right angles.Maybe someone on this forum might offer to do it for him. But if not he is going to have to find somone to do it. Not all the diff places are idiots if they are idiots then they wont last long in the game. I also thought this forum was a freindly place where you could seek or offer advice without worrying about other people who criticize but then offer nothing constructive.  I was wrong.                          Chris

Chrisfc I dont think you are wrong about this forum. Fantastic adice offered however sometimes it would seem emotions run high when responding to a post in the english language.  We all have a dfferent understanding of what was said. Your answer was very constructive, so in the interests of the forum please dont stop offering advce.

Rusty,

I did have a look, it appears that you have a six leaf spring pack, mine is four and has the rubber insulators. I can see how you have used the "U" bolts as opposed to the bolts that bolt the top and bottom plate together.

This raises further questions:
1) Should the FC have six leaves, the car that I removed the rear end from sat quite low, I wouldn't want to go any lower in the rear.

2) I wont be using lowering blocks with these springs, do I still have to run insulators, or do I just cut off the bottom plate from the HR diff, weld on a spring pad and slip a set of "U" bolts in to elminate the spring insulation rubbers. If I eliminate the rubbers , is there much noise transmitted fom the driveline?

standard & special sedans had 4 leaves
business sedans & wagons have 5 leaves
utes and vans have 6 leaves
It has been common practice over the years to boost saggy sedan rears with wagon or van springs.

You can eliminate the insulators but noise and vibration are increased - not recommended.

Have a look at a HR ute rear suspension - they have a spacer plate in between the 2 halves to compensate for the increased number of spring leaves.
I think 6 leaves is a little much for a sedan - try removing the very bottom leaf.

Waynos. Dont worry about its all cool. Dont know what happened i spent half an hour posting a reply last night dont know where it ended up. In cyberspace somewhere. But just quickly i had a hd prem torana diff housing hr mounts new springs extra leafs which needed spacers between the saddle and lower bracket/shocker mount.But it jumped over the locating pins. So i got rid of the spacers. But then it started tearing the saddle and i got sick of welding it up and i think i sold it soon after. It was a nice looking car slightly pumped rear gaurds i had 275/60/15s on the rear I think they were about 31" tall. It sat fairly level
because the rear springs were lowered 2". So thats why i wouldnt use the hr mounts again. I was going to suggest what fc427 said but i havent done a diff swap in about 15 years and i thought there might be a better way these days. I have been out of the car scene for a while because of my daughters sporting career which took us all around australia and overseas $$$. And the person i used for any diff stuff was Murry Anderson who built Victor Brays 57's. Dont kow if he still does. There are some clever guys out there but yes you do have to be very careful theres lots of not so clever guys who will charge you twice as much.  I hope it works this time i'm sick of writing the same story over and over.  Regards Chris

Sorry i lied i think those tyres were only about 27" or 28" inches tall. 31" sounded really good at the time. Still they wrere big mofo tyres...
