Hey all just wondering if anyone has done a similar conversion by fitting a commodore diff and hr front end with hq stub axles and commodore discs and rotors and if so what offset wheels did you use or was the diff shortened and stock commodore offset used front and rear.

You must shorten the Commodore diff no matter what wheels you choose. Running Commodore wheels alleviates the necessity to restud the axles.
Commodore calipers will not fit on HQ stub axles - you need a kit to fit this type of brake set up. Hoppers Stoppers or CRS both sell kits which utilise different types of rotor and caliper combinations in order to make it all work.
CRS drop stubs are an effective and easy way to fit Commodore rotors and calipers if you really want to go down that path as long as you get the ones with 2 different drill patterns either side.
I assume you want to fit pre VR rotors with hubs built in, otherwise the later Commodore rotors will see you having to buy a hub adapter to make it work.

All seems a bit out of my price range so I am gonna sell or swap my vp donor car and go with injected vk drivetrain.

Dont be put off jason.
diff can be shortened on the cheap, (2 short ends used).
run hq stubs, rotors and calipers on the front (same stud pattern as commo).
depends whether or not your keen to do things yourself in the end.

wouldn't you have to shorten the vk diff same as later models??

Hey Jason,

The type of conversion that you are talking about as the second choice will still cost you around the same money.

You can get a diff ready to bolt in from V6 conversions for around $900, front end Hq studs wont fit commodore, from what I have read here previously I think that the HQ is about .5 mm out and will break studs so I would recommend a Hoppers Stoppers conversion, also around $900.
Have a look at http://www.v6conversions.com.au and see what needs to be done. then if you are still unsure at least you know exactly what will be required.

You are going to need an engineer regardless of which way you do the swap, there is around $1000 also.

V6 conversions has an adaptor setup for $150 to fit commo calipers to HQ drum stubs on the front which was the way I was going to go. But the kit being over $2300 plus $900 for a diff and $350 for a tailshaft plus custom wheels or modified steelies at $150 each for the steelies. which is about $4300 for conversion and thats not including anything i may have forgotten I cant see a red motor conversion costing that much but I may be wrong. But as far as I can see it will be an EH sump and a CRS trans tunnel which will set me back roughly $400 which is less than a tenth as dear and if I go the vk efi the wiring is a simple diy job with instructions with photos and the like all over the net. I would prefer the V6 but I don't think it is affordable right now for me and I can always fit one later if you know a cheaper way I would love to know as I already have the donor car.

No mate, thats about the cost of the conversion whichever way you do it, plus the engineer... My front end alone was $4975 delivered, the diff will be around $2000 and thats with me doing the shortening, plus all of the extras that you have mentioned.

Do the sums the other way I would be interested to know how that works too... it also helps others looking.

Like you said FEvanv6 it will cost thousands more for the V6 and the red motor i already have in my shed as well with a trimatic. I already have the hr front end and the banjo will do ok with the red as well. I didn't add the demister etc because i have to do it with both combinations and all i was adding up was the expense on top for the V6. So its a red for now and V6 later unfortunately.
