what gearbox would be best to use on a grey motor and i want to keep my bench seat and i dont want to cut the floor to much.
people have told me to use an opel 4 speed or a datsun 1600 4 speed, then other people have told me that they are no good because with the opel it has brass bushes and i will wear them out and with the datsun 1600 i will break the spline. Can someone please help?

G'Day Twitch
Alas due to the size of the FC tranny tunnel you dont have much choice but to cut it and the crossmember underneath. People where fitting datsun 4 speeds about 10 years ago because of its small size.
If the grey is fairly stock the datsun box will be fine, if not get in touch with the rod shop they sell all adaptors to suit nearly any gearbox and they also sell new transmisson tunnels(same as ek auto floor).
The aussie four speed fits up and runs well with the grey.
Good Luck

Twitch, none of the jap gearboxes will let u keep the (unmodified) bench seat, there was a discussion about 2 months ago re mods to an Aus 4 speed which allowed the use of the bench.  Try searching for this thread - I'm sorry I couldn't find it after a quick look.

The Opel boxes are getting hard to get in good condition. It should take the power of the grey, after all, they were installed behind reds originally. Just go easy. The Datsun was a popular conversion in it's day due to the ease of finding the box. Whichever you go for, you will have to make / buy an adapter for the rear motor mounts. Ken mentioned the 4spd shifter conversion, here is a link.

Twitch

I'm currently working on moving the gear stick forward on an aussie, based of Alex's pics.  I've been joting down measurements as I go so I can post them for everyone to use.  The first set will be up next week (I hope!)

Mean while check out the link Alex gave you so you can see what you are up against.

Titch

I emailed the first part of this mod yesterday (adapter plates).  RET has put it in the tech info section:

http://www.fefcholden.org.au/techinfo/tech004.html

I'll put the next stage (linkage connections) in once I've done it.
