What do you get for $6500 these days???

If you were to buy a late model car for that price, in years to come it will be worth much less. On the other hand if you were to get this FC for that price, in years to come it will be worth a lot more. They are only going up in value because they are getting scarcer.

If we had $6500, we would jump at the opportunity to buy it.

Hi Oldiebutagoodie.

Its hard to form an opinion from photos, particularly of a car that has had a fair bit of work done, as this has, some of it unsympathetic. Interior paint colours on the front doors and dash are wrong, it has an FE front bar centre section and what looks to be an EJ engine. The engine bay is missing bolts and looks to have been fairly poorly detailed.

Its hard to judge the paint quality from the photos. As rust is a major issue with these cars and someone has been everywhere before on this one, I suggest a careful inspection before bidding to be warranted.

Gwen, the assumption that these cars will significantly increase in value is tempting but is not necessarily so. Its all to do with supply and demand. On the supply side, with 195,000 produced of which probably 70% were special sedans, these are not rare. The other issue is demand. Generally this depends on desirability, rarity, demographics and the economic situation. The recent bubble (now mostly over) in Aussie muscle cars was fueled primarily by cashed up baby boomers and lots of money washing around. As the boomers, who were reliving their youth get older generation X, who didn't grow up with GT Falcons, might want RX7s or turbo Skylines and Supras, who knows? If you look at cars that have dramatically increased in price rarity is the major factor.

The appeal of these Holdens is that they are good looking, plentiful, simple, robust and relatively cheap. Additionally, there's an emotional element because most of us knew someone who owned one when they were new. It would be hard not to as GMH had 50% of the market in 1959. In 10 years time though who's to say the demand will remain? British sports car prices have been effectively static for 15 years. Markets evolve and change. Remember when FJ prices were sky high and no one wanted FXs? Now an early production, highly original FX will bring far more than an FJ sedan. For stockies, originality and patina are now becoming more valued than before and people are becoming more careful in their restorations. In modifieds the rules haven't changed, its all about the quality of whats been done and how effective it is. Like everything there's good art and not so good.

And then there are maintenance costs.

Although they should not be regarded as such, the best way to safeguard your investment is to buy what you like and the best car you can afford.

I was wondering about the value, but I had no idea about the dash colours and the fact that the engine looks like an EJ's!

I would be an emotional buyer, as I love this model, and my son would restore it with me.

I will let you know if we go ahead.  I may need some help!
