So, I rang Shannons to get a quote for my "new" FE. Talked to the guy, told him I was overseas for the moment but my father would collect and store the car for a while until I get back. THen I got the quote and nearly fell over - $141.78!! What?? Is that all you pay nowadays?

Over here I would get classic car insurance for maybe $350-400 plus rego which is about $70.

If it was an ordinary car it would be about $800-900 for me in a 9 year old C180 Merc. That is for comp with full no claims for 20 years plus. Rego is a further $850 or so.

If I was under 21 it would cost about $5000-8000 for a car and it had better be under 1.3l and even better still, 1.1l max - toyota starlet or similar. For girls under 21 it would be about $1500. These are both for third party fire and theft and not comp. You can't get comp till you are over 25 in reality.

Even when you get to 25, males can still be $1500-2000 per year and the girls maybe $1000-1250 give or take.

I remember my first third party insurance in about '83 was less than $50.....25 years on it is now only $140 it seems!! That's inflation for ya!!

Certainly Shannons is the way to go in Australia.  My 1929 Rugby and my 59FC, with laid up cover while being restored, for a total cover of $12,500 is $120.  As FC427 mentioned, salvage rights and a free windscreen per year.

How do salvage rights actually work? I have always wondered about that.

I ask this as I had my commodore written off a few years ago that was parked in the street late one night. It was drivable (sort of) the whole boot section was bent down from the windscreen and a nice big dint magically appeared in the middle of the roof. Sad

I drove it down to the AAMI center and I was paid out, I asked them about purchasing the car and they said I could have it at a particular price. $1200 from memory. I did not take them up but should have.

If your Shannon's car gets wiped out what do you have to do or pay to own the wreck or is it yours if you want it for nothing??

Mikey  The car may be a statutory write off or just uneconomical to repair[more $$$ damages than it is insurance value] but you still get to keep it, with out having to buy it back ........FC427......

Thanks for that 427, nice to know the car is still yours without having to fork out the big ones.

you mention rego, don't know how long since you were here but now we have (in NSW) rego-$250ish, green slip 3rd party insurance for bodily damage to a person-annywhere from $250ish up to $700ish, both of these are compulsory then there's third party property and everything inbetween up to full comprehensive
when i had my V8 FB van it cost me $504 for rego and greenslip it had full comp insurance with limited use value $12,000 for $260 a year
my VT commodore everyday car insured for $6,500 costs $400 odd a year

Am just about to transfer my insurance to Shannons from Suncorp.  Shannons for $10,000 is $87.48 with more benefits than Suncorp. Suncorp for $8000 is $189.  Have been with Suncorp for years with no claims.    I believe RACQ is quite reasonable for Cars on Club Rego.

My quote is for full road rego - it would have been cheaper if I put the car on club rego, how much I don't know.

I will end up selling on the FE-1957 vic plates before I export it - any idea what those plates are worth?

Do you get CTP discounts with Shannons if you have a comprehensive policy?

Compulsory Third Party Insurance. Covers the costs of any injuries to third parties involved in accidents.
In NSW it has been de regulated and you can shop around and get CTP cover from any provider to get the best price. In the ACT you pay for it as partr of your registration

I get CTP discounts with GIO, as I have a policy with them.

The prices end up being very similar to Shannons.

My past driving record was far from angelic (no DUI's tho) and GIO insures the wagon, unlimited kms, salvage rights etc etc.  They put an additional $500 on the excess for driving history.

Cheers

one of the many things i luv about living in the country just paid $259 CTP for VT commodore the FB van was only $243 commercial vehicle, most people i know that live in sydney are with utes/vans are paying $500 upwards
another differance between crashbox and FC427 is an early model V's a late model, the insurance Co's usually charge more for an early model car than a late model
there is a web site that gives comparisons
