Anyone got a nice pair they want to part with? They will get to travel the world and see some wonderful things not many FC parts get to do.....

OK - I'll have a look. What about the rest of the ute - where has that gone?

Hi Paul,

Have you found a set of spears yet? They are die cast by the way. I still have the set before I changed mine to a "Special".

I just went down the shed 9.15pm - in the cold - it's getting into winter here- not an Irish winter but cold for here - and found the spears, gave them a quick clean up. Right hand looks ok with some pitting (typical die cast) the left has quite a bit of pitting on the lower half. If you can't get any better ones they are yours if you want them - just have to work out how to get them to you. Grin

Thanks for the offer Tony - I still have not got a set. Can you rechrome die cast metal or how do you bring them back up? I can get chroming done here and if that would work I would be happy to do a deal with you.

Paul.

Yes, die cast can be re chromed but due to the often poor condition of the parts it can be an expensive process to repair. Essentially the base metal corrodes and bursts out of the plating causing the familiar bubbles that we all know.

It can take quite a bit of labour to repair them by removing the old plating (normal on any job) and having to ensure that all the corrosion is removed by sandblasting clean and then drilling or grinding out each individual corrosion pit with a Dremel or similar.

Filling of these holes with solder or other conductive materials and the replating and subsequent finishing of these usually poor parts is where the time and labour are tied up.

That being said it is far from impossible to get done you just have to find a plater who isn't going to groan as soon as you tell them what you have. Obviously there are platers that do replate this stuff and do it well and those that just don't want to bother with all the hassle. Just got to find em.

Mikey's right, most platers don't want to know - have a talk to the car clubs over there and find out who is the best plater and go and talk to them as I would imagine the problem with die cast in your conditions would be worse then here and they might have a few tricks or more willing to repair and plate them.
If that is a dud the only other suggestion might be to talk to a restoration shop to reproduce them in stainless - just a thought as there are some excellent craftsman over there that can and do make anything.

Talking to some car club guys, there are a couple of really good platers over near London who seem reasonable and do proper triple plating.

Tony - is that ute in the big picture the same one in your profile pic?

Anyway, don't know how much you want for them or what the postage is but pm me and we can sort something out.

thanks again,

Paul.
