Fatboy, just about any dress fabric shop worth it's salt will sell what you are looking for, it's called (Gingham check) it is available in different colours & sizes of check and also in different fabrics, although mostly cotton, and mostly red/white & black/white.
If you want it thicker just sew a liner on the back, a lot of these shops will also know someone who can run them up for you if you give them an old curtain as a template or the measurments.
