They are to stop the followers from rotating, they can't rotate because if they did the roller would tear the cam to pieces. The roller must stay inline with the cam lobe - hence the connecting plates on the lifters/followers Smiley

The rate at which the rocker will stroke is approximately 33 strokes a second at 4000 rpm.  Any engine does a remarkable job hanging together, as long as they already do in my opinion. I've been watching with much interest.

Of course! I hadn't seen that before, but I should have been able to work it out.
