Hi all,
I've just stripped another fibre timing gear. I'm running a deadstock grey.
What is the better replacement option?
Another fibre gear?
Alloy gear set
All steel gear set
And where can I get what I need?

Steel gear set is the best.
Not sure who current supplier is, they can be difficult to get at times.
Try the usual such as Rare Spares etc

I have a steel set in my ute they are quite noisy sound a bit like a gear drive, but i like it that way with a mild cam sounds like a warm grey. The alloy steel combo are much quieter and are available from the manufacturer JP Engineering SA http://www.jp.com.au/Performance.html. But they can have issues too. cheers Scott |

I fitted a steel gear to my grey, purchased through the Vic FE FC Club. I used the original driving gear on the crank. delighted with the result and it is quiet. Fraze

Thanks all. The Ebay gear is an alloy set. What are my chances of getting a steel set? As I believe that these are more reliable than the alloy set.

You don't want a steel set, get the Speco single steel gear that's designed to work with the stock camshaft gear. You can get them on Ebay, and some of the clubs keep stock of them for their members.

As a precaution, unscrew the oil fitting from the front engine mount plate, run a piece of wire through it, blow it out with air, and refit it so the hole points to the place where the timing gears mesh.
Then when the camshaft's back in, but before refitting the timing cover, drive the oil pump with a drill and see that there's a good flow of oil out of the fitting.
(I replaced two timing gears in quick succession. The first one broke a few teeth off. The second one failed because of lubrication failure. Particles of phenolic from the first timing gear ran up the oil gallery and blocked the timing gear oil fitting, and the second one ran dry. Beware!)
