You certainly like tall gearing, Haydn...
There's nothing hard about maintaining a Holden of that era, it's mostly about having the tools and the spares or access to the spares.
I think I'd be looking for a ball joint front end and disc brakes if it were me, just a bit more modern and efficient, good shocks like Konis and make sure the cooling system was in first class order. Gauges would be a nice extension to all of that.

Surely those tiny number stamped on machined surfaces were the identifier of the person who machined that part?
This is a technique used by Peugeot at least until the 1980s. Every machinist had their stamp and marked each part they machined.

Come on guys... if you want to post on the thread, please read it from the beginning so you don't ask questions that have been answered 11 years ago!
As for the Opel connection, the point made was not about the design or even common parts, it was that it is extremely unlikely that Opel had the capacity to make any bits for Holdens at the time.

That photo is of the engine in the prototype car... go back a couple of pages for all the pics...
As for Germany and Opel, I don't think the Holden engine was anything like their stuff. A little more like the Vauxhall, but even then it was more like a baby Chev.
And what was Germany's production capacity like in 1946/7 after their factories had been being bombed for all those years?

Hmmm...
As people who have seen the Muskegon blocks have never mentioned this, I would initially suspect that the 'Made in Canada' part of the story applies to the logo.

Hmmm... that makes me wonder if I should ever have handed over those Sports Car World magazines to you...
Nice to see you adding to the information here, Dave.

I can't find how to edit my last post!
On going through the race report again, I think what I wrote above is incorrect. I think the report, though it says that Peter 'spun', means that he 'spun his wheels'.
Looking more thoroughly at the context of it all, it seems he was not left behind by much, nor passed by the multitudes.
So yes, he would be coming up to lap Phil in this pic.

Perhaps...
I'm sure Fred was into the MG A Twin Cam by the time I first attended a race meeting. I've never heard of him racing an early Holden at all, so I am dubious. Maybe he prepared it for someone else.
A couple of other things.
Tony Parkinson... Don Lemm would undoubtedly have photos of his car. But I feel sure that Tony is still around too, I think I spoke to him just a couple of years ago. Try the SCC of SA library, you have people like Michael Gasking there who are keen to help out.
Thanks, FE UTE - that clarifies the FE and Brock situation. I would almost guarantee that Peter had nothing to do with that car. First, because he was busy enough with his A30, second because there was at that time a growing animosity between Peter and Phil. Well, maybe not animosity. Phil saw parental favour being thrown Peter's way with his growing success while he got none of that attention.
I feel quite sure that Phil would have reckoned he had to do it all himself. Geoff probably helped, but Peter wouldn't have been a party to it at all.
I wouldn't guarantee that Peter is coming up to lap Phil, either. This race was a rare one, I don't recall many wet races at Sandown at all, but on September 14 1969 it did rain and this race was the worst affected on the day.
Peter spun when the flag came down to start the race, so the whole field streamed away around him. He did catch up and was to finish second in the event, but with only eight laps it's not all that likely that he would have lapped Phil.

Back in the third week of December 2008 I went around my dad's place to help him take down a fence...
His neighbour wanted to put up a colourbond one and so dad asked for my help with the old one so a contractor could come in and erect the new fence.
A week or so later my sister phoned, she was on her way around there as dad had died about 3am that day.
We worked on cars together, cut down trees together, argued about various differences and laughed about things together. He outlived his father by 11 years to die at 86. I'll be happy if I can outlive him by 11 years!

That would be 'Advancetown' just up the hill from Mudgeeraba... one word...
Wish I could help, I have to go to Sydney but I won't be going to the Gold Coast prior to that trip.

I wasn't aware of Fred ever racing any Holden... perhaps he prepared it?
He raced, that I recall:
MG A Twin Cam Morris 850 Lightweight Lotus Elan (x2) Morris Cooper S Falcon GTs and GT HOs Brabham Climax 2.5 Elfin 400 Chev McLaren M4a FVA Alfa GTV2000 Nissan Bluebird
No... he did drive Joe Moore's A9X at Bathurst in '79.

Here's Bob Holden taking off from the Phillip Island grid The Porsche is probably Eddie Perkins, Larry's father. I don't know (or care?) who's in the Standard 10 at the back of the field! Here's Bob going round The Copse, heading for the sweeper that leads onto the main straight.

Having spoken to Bob Holden I can confirm that Kingsley's car did have a Repco head, a 4-speed brakes and most likely disc brakes...
Bob was also good enough to send me photos of his ex-Repco Research FE racing, I forgot to upload them before I left home but that shall soon be done and they'll be posted here.

Mal, that's interesting...
It would be good to check that block out with a sonic tester. My nephew has a block at his workshop that's been bored to the same and he's sonic tested that one and found it to be sound. He had a buyer for it but they've not come back.

No 2 Mayvic Street, wasn't it?
And Ken Waggott was in Canterbury Road at Belmore, right?
Even further from Yagoona!
My memory of their locations, however, only goes back to the mid-sixties.
Thanks RET, that's great.
