Title: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on May 28, 2011, 05:24:35 PM I have finally bought myself a FC holden, I was after a EK, but finding any old holden in tassie is getting hard. Buying from the big island was going to cost a fair chunk out of my budget.
A big thank you to Bill & Judi Wedd for selling me this car, Very nice, help full people. My plan was to replace the floorpan, Interior, machanical with a VS commodore V6 ecotech,4 speed auto, IRS but not sure what i was going to do with the front end as yet. I think my first step is to have it sand blasted see how bad the rust is and go from there. There is a fair bit of rust, but not as much as i first though So here are the pictures so far (http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy24/missbridgethay/FC%20Holden/IMG_3198_zpseae54e93.jpg) (http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy24/missbridgethay/FC%20Holden/IMG_3199_zpsac2b246f.jpg) (http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy24/missbridgethay/FC%20Holden/IMG_3200_zps8aaff73c.jpg) (http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy24/missbridgethay/FC%20Holden/IMG_3201_zpsc5f9301c.jpg) (http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy24/missbridgethay/FC%20Holden/IMG_3202_zps2e51881f.jpg) (http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy24/missbridgethay/FC%20Holden/IMG_3203_zpsede9052a.jpg) (http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy24/missbridgethay/FC%20Holden/IMG_3204_zpsce1f87f9.jpg) (http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy24/missbridgethay/FC%20Holden/IMG_3205_zps58f7b867.jpg) (http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy24/missbridgethay/FC%20Holden/IMG_3206_zps274e5a8f.jpg) (http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy24/missbridgethay/FC%20Holden/IMG_3207_zpsd7bf0909.jpg) (http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy24/missbridgethay/FC%20Holden/IMG_3208_zps8061091c.jpg) (http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy24/missbridgethay/FC%20Holden/IMG_3209_zps6c9b8f63.jpg) (http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy24/missbridgethay/FC%20Holden/IMG_3211_zps3b7518fe.jpg) (http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy24/missbridgethay/FC%20Holden/IMG_3212_zps5fbd33e4.jpg) (http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy24/missbridgethay/FC%20Holden/IMG_3213_zpse63d0ab1.jpg) (http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy24/missbridgethay/FC%20Holden/IMG_3214_zps12cc3773.jpg) (http://i774.photobucket.com/albums/yy24/missbridgethay/FC%20Holden/IMG_3215_zps670d6754.jpg) Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: customFC on May 28, 2011, 10:38:00 PM Congrats on picking up your FC.
Looks like a bit of work ahead, but it sounds like many of the problem areas would be cut away anyway. Good luck and keep us updated. Regards Alex Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: weddo on May 28, 2011, 10:50:12 PM Geez, don't hit it too hard with the sandblaster Nick, you might only come back with the steering wheel and stainless trims ;D ;D ;D
Regards Weddo Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: TTV6FC on May 29, 2011, 07:35:19 PM Just looking at it I think you will be shocked at how much rust it has but Sand Blasting is the only way to go.At least you'll know what you're up against and if you are dedicated and have some welding/fabricating skills you will get it done. One thing I've learned is never expect it to be done in a day,it will take much longer (unless you've got heaps of cash and pay someone else to do it ;) then it will take a little less time.....and don't plan on having any more kids during the build either or it will take even longer... ::)....
Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on May 29, 2011, 10:26:48 PM Ive got 3 years for the tassie nationals, thats my aim. Fabricating and welding isnt a problem for me either. Here is the last "thing" i built, It wont be to anyone taste here. ;D
Its commodore mechanical engine,5 speed, diff,Struts, Brakes and a bit of Toyota stuff in there as well Xmember, Rack and pinion, Steering column, Pedal box, 4 Link Rear. Most people dont believe its rear wheel drive, At car shows you usually see people lying under the rear saying "yeah it has a diff under it" Took me a Year and a half to complete from start to finish, But i am still collecting parts to a bit more on it. Everything is fabricated by me, except the intercooling pipes and Aluminium boot floor. will also be featured in Zoom magazine soon. Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on January 05, 2012, 08:05:44 PM Front subframe is off, Im amazed how good everything is, the subframe lower bolts are perfect, Subframe arms are also perfect and where the sides connect to the firewall its still shiny silver metal.
The only rust is the very front on the top side under the grill, i dont understand why the floors are so bad, the bonnets bad, and lower doors are all rusted but stuff you think would also be badly rusted are not. Looks good. 8) 8) Nearly finished :D That's my next task... fitting new sills. Only the outers thank goodness. Are you going to put the doors back on when fitting the outer sill??? Nick Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: fcwrangler on February 12, 2012, 11:45:01 PM Nick, have a look on my build site(my fc rebuild) Glenn(fcv8 shed find ute) gave me some great shots of the inner mounting plates for the front end. They gave me a lot of help in setting it all up, just be mindfull of the need to have the mudguard mounting holes level with the inner sill panel not the step out for the mounting plate. If you take a close look at the photos, it shows a step of about 15mm from the bottom of the mounting plate before the guard holes. I used the old slip nuts from later model guards for the guard bolts to screw into a whole lot easyer than trying to weld nuts in place, also makes it easier to do the bolts up later on.
Regards Jim Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on March 03, 2012, 05:36:16 PM thanks guys, i looked it up and it helped.

Had surgery to wire it back together. didn't sleep friday night spent the night in the hospital and most of saturday, had ex rays yesturday and its healing well. so its all ok now.
im sorry i couldn't stay longer and had to rush off. Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: fcwrangler on March 04, 2012, 09:06:08 AM Nick, you have fallen into the same trap as me. The mounting plate is a pressed section that sit away from the by about 15mm. The bottom edge of the inner sill needs to be in line with the sill not kicked out as you have done as you will not be able to bolt the guards on. I'ts hard to explain in words but if you look at the photos of other cars you will see that the plate is pressed out where the support block is mounted. Have a look on Why don't you take the FC on, Rob has a good shot of the section he made which shows the shape it should be.
All the best with the rest, Jim Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on March 04, 2012, 03:05:53 PM Mine does have the "pressed in part" for the lower subframe bolt, its hard to see, but the end if the sill should line up with the floor to pilar joint. Thats how the other side is. with the rare spares sills there isnt much of a bottom lip so something needs to be welded on for the guards, the end of the sill does curve at the end standard a bit.

Also i dont have the steering rack yet so maybe i wont have that much lock. 290x22 VP disks and VS Calipers on HR drum stubs and Adapters. everything bolted up perfect. can you run callipers on the rear Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on June 11, 2012, 06:46:18 PM i cant run the calipers on the rear as im going to have rear steering rack, well thats the plan.

If you run into trouble on the upper ball joint you can also try WB ute ones. They are sealed and a very low profile. and not having alot of time to fix the ones i have, ive lost some motivation. The shell is almost complete, but i don't think ill make it for the nats here in tassie. spent 2 days on it, 80% of the outer sills are also done. i was also lucky to sandblast and reuse the rear lower dogleg sill corner. Ive used reproduction sills, there is no bend in the middle or ends. Next problem with the left side rear dogleg is rusted all the way around the arch inside and out and i really dont know how to attack it. Im not a panel man. I got myself a perfect bonnet, its like new on the underside just rough paint on the top. i also got 2 front bumpers, both are bad chrome but better then nothing and right and left front doors complete so i have my passenger window, but i think they may have less rust than the ones i have. Ive started to get stuck into it again, tomorrow ill get the tunnel welded in. im also thinking of running a straight 6 instead of the commodore v6, i thinking for ease of engineering. get it on the road. and the good old red motor are cheap as chips these days. finally got seats, Thanks to Josh (Ol_Girl_58) for the front and rear seats and 3/4 of a rear bumper I hope to get all the underside repairs finished this weekend, then ill just have the passenger side rear quater to do. Tig takes a while but you will find how neat you can go on car panels. Really sharp tip and use mig wire for filler. Is it high frequency start or scratch start ? pete Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on June 25, 2013, 09:16:44 AM high frequency DC only, as you said good for car panels. I made the tunnel strengthener with the TIG not real pretty welds but good penetration.
Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: customFC on June 26, 2013, 12:11:35 AM Nice progress.
Nice to have a TIG...jealous!! Regards Alex Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on June 30, 2013, 05:33:39 PM I thought id get all the welding done this weekend, i had two days, but as usual saturday was used up picking up a EH 149 engine for the sump and pickup. The motor "was turning over with the starter motor" I got it home not checking before hand, Its sized, i couldn't get it to turn over and i havent had time to pull it down yet.
My mate also came around and wanted me to help lower his commodore. I handed him a bunch of tools and said call me when you get stuck, well every 5 minutes he was stuck. I got my chassis strengthening done, cleaned the shed a bit and put the car on its other side. They use a lot of lead in the joint here. All thats left is fix the rear corner under the bumper area. This took me all day, have to wait till next weekend to finish up. My sedan which is heavilly moded needed the rear calliper mount rotated down 20 degrees Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: hsv-001 on September 02, 2013, 03:31:01 PM Mate could you explain it to NES304 as I'm not enjoying it anymore. Wayne's rear axle was too short[Old Mt Isa boy] From memory I think he told me he got the measurement off this forum [maybe it was the measurement for a drum brake rear end]. When I installed it there was no handbrake brackets on it. Whoever shortened it removed them, also being that short the distance between the brake line mounting brackets was less than between the inner wheel arches [tubs] and I have seen so many of these axle conversions over the past 20 years and its not a problem till you are carrying a load and don't see the speed bump. So I'm sorry its getting repetitive but if you are not experienced at these mods find someone with a car or cars that have these mods and have been driven[for decades if possible] then copy theirs. Incidental this is probably why the crewman mounts the handbrake cable on the leaf spring[to allow for a maximum size wheel by keeping the axle short] they might have used a different offset or provided for a larger than standard rim. Anyway I'll leave it alone from now on.
Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on September 02, 2013, 08:20:16 PM I shortened my diff 50mm each side, i went for standard track with standard commodore 15'' wheels 1384mm (currently at 1390 with mag wheels).
I have 15mm clearance for both flexible hose and bracket , its something i didn't think of untill now, but there is no issue, it clears. Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NES304 on September 02, 2013, 09:43:01 PM Mate could you explain it to NES304 as I'm not enjoying it anymore. HSV001 - Hey mate I wasn't having a go just wondered why you asked on two different threads? I shortened my diff 50mm each side, Did mine 67mm both sides they might have used a different offset or provided for a larger than standard rim. Anyway I'll leave it alone from now on. As far as I am aware my crewman has the same offset as a sedanTitle: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on September 02, 2013, 10:55:53 PM well that would be the reason yours is fouling, my 50mm + the 15mm gap = 65mm so your 67mm would hit. So what is your total track measured to the centre of both tires, it should be 1384mm
You must have wanted to run some large offset wheels? Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: fink on September 02, 2013, 11:37:23 PM If you get desperate,iv'e got a few HP mtrs here,i can drop one off at the SAT,it's just down the road from me,Gaz! 8)

Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on November 30, 2013, 07:28:14 PM Been a bit slack lately, got the roof and dash stripped back to metal. Im worried about the pitting rust under the old paint, I've used a rust converter and i hope that fixes it.

Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on December 08, 2013, 07:22:53 AM Its a statment now as its in primer.
Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: fe350chev on December 09, 2013, 12:27:51 PM Im at the same stage thats all and mine is pitted to buggery. Did the primer come up on and fill the pin sized holes. I think the metal is fairly thick so I was gunna keep going until I get it smoother.
Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on December 09, 2013, 06:05:16 PM ok, i used a rust converter that turned it all black, gave that a very light sand and then about 3 coats of primer/filler rubbed it back with 240 dry paper, took a fair bit off, then 360 dry paper and its nice and smooth and has a slight shine to it.
I had to fill a few very light dents that i had taken out with spot filler and now i just have to give it a another thick coat and another light sand to put the colour on. But i won't be doing that until i get the door jams and rear guards prepped for primer. Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on December 27, 2013, 07:37:42 PM Ive worked out i have 18 full days i can work on my FC before the Nationals. Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: fcwrangler on January 08, 2014, 03:32:33 PM The reason for the back seat being smaller & flatter is the rear screens sit lower in the body so the parcel shelf is lower.

Padding in that area wouldn't hold, it is only a thick wire frame, you could bend the frame but that will likely pull the sides in. You'd be better off with the right seat frame in the first place, I am sure I have one around here it wouldn't add much more to the cost of freight.Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NES304 on January 10, 2014, 12:55:08 PM I'll take that speaker grill for $20 :o

Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: fcwrangler on January 20, 2014, 08:33:46 AM A mate of mine did this a couple of years ago on an FB cut it off and smoothed it then filled the hole with fibrenicky which is much stronger than the normal. If you do it this way, remove the steering wheel and push an oily rag down to cover the inside to stop excess oozing through.

Pete Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: mcl1959 on February 02, 2014, 09:22:41 PM Basically you have to bend the hinge to move the door out. The trick is to remove the hinge and dismantle it before bending. Draw a template so you can make a judgement of how far you are bending it.
You can do it cold if you have a press, or heat it up if not. You're first move is that the curve in the hinge needs to be increased. Do one bend compare it to your template of how it was before bending then reassemble it into the car to check your progress. Ken Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: hsv-001 on February 02, 2014, 10:12:15 PM Before getting too drastic , make sure that the front Phillips head bolt [the one that you can see the end of with the guard off] is all the way home . If its not the hinge will twist in and out and can look a lot like what you have there. If all else fails then the block of wood or the rubber hammer . Cheers Haydn
Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: TTV6FC on February 03, 2014, 08:31:14 PM It helps to be using all the original panels too but often due to condition of originals, panels get swapped out (this all goes without saying I guess). After I had a few fitment problems I realised that not having ALL the screws and bolts in the front hinges did make a difference.I only had minor trouble with the top frame of the rear passenger side door and by putting a piece of 18mm MDF at the top of the front of the frame and closing the door onto it (in the door jamb) fixed it easily.I accidently mixed up the hinges from one door to a changeover door on the drivers side rear door which threw it way out. After inspectiong both hinges they were very different in offset and obviously adjusted differently at production.Cheers,Jamie.
Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on February 03, 2014, 08:41:39 PM well im using different hinges and a different door, i didnt think there would be that much difference, but i know how to fix it now.

Adjust the bonnet by moving it forward on the hinges. Regards Alex Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on March 03, 2014, 07:53:37 AM i could but the gap at the rear is just as big.
Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: hsv-001 on March 03, 2014, 09:40:40 AM Alex is correct , looking at the photo the bonnet needs to come forward to match the guards . Its always interesting to see how people line up panels on their old girls . My first thought would be to get some masking tape to protect your paintwork . Mask heavy down the front of your doors then remove or loosen your guard bolts including the ones on the pillar then start at the front bolts and work back towards the door . If you get the ones close to the grille pulled up the guard will be pushed back[sometimes too far] so be careful .One more tip when aligning doors I use a milk crate [depends on ride height] with a folded towel on it to take the weight and a piece of old carpet to gap the door off the scuffplate then close the door and climb inside and tighten the hinges and finally adjust the catch .Cheers Haydn
Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on March 10, 2014, 06:57:05 PM I fixed the bonnet gap, was the grill shell i had, it was bent, i had two others to try and found the best fitting one.

Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on December 21, 2014, 12:00:39 PM it will be si rego, so only taken out a few times a year.
put in new springs in the front, look like a old drag car sitting up at the front. also the seat cover from pete is now in, i changed it a bit and it looks fantastic as i have no real budget left for a new interior yet. You didnt muck around with getting the interior done. Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: DJ on December 21, 2014, 01:19:39 PM Great progress. Are those plastic seat trims interchangeable with FC? I may have better luck finding EK if they can be made to fit.
Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: mcl1959 on December 21, 2014, 02:36:19 PM The EK trims fit OK but are not as tall up the back as FC. this is a small issue for original seats, but no problem if you are getting a retrim.
Ken Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: DJ on December 21, 2014, 02:42:08 PM Thanks Ken,
That's good news. Getting new trim is from Glenn. Dave. Title: Re: Post by: fe350chev on December 21, 2014, 06:27:47 PM It's really coming along now. Won't be long.
Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on December 21, 2014, 08:27:01 PM the EK metal seat sides are much better than the plastic and fitted without ant modifications.
I still have to block it back and buff it before i can put all the stainless and door handles, Im not looking forward to that. Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: DJ on December 21, 2014, 08:48:45 PM I has an EK 40 years ago & hadn't remembered they were metal. Lucky they fit.
The old plastic in the FCs lasted so many years in service that I don't think anyone could complain. Title: Re: Post by: fe350chev on December 23, 2014, 01:51:10 PM Sorry if I missed it but what sort of paint ya gunna use.
Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on December 24, 2014, 08:12:38 AM I used acrylic paint. this was my first car that I've fully painted, I made a lot of mistakes along the way but acrylic is easy to fix.
Title: Re: Post by: fe350chev on December 24, 2014, 09:44:18 AM Ok. I think it's cheaper but not necessarily easier anymore. If you rub 2k down to good paint with 1200, then you just go over it with colour then clear straight away and it's finished! Much easier than acrylic, but I never believed it either. Is def more expensive. But I think they have removed vital ingredients from the newer acrylics to a point that I don't trust them anymore. Dad's a French polisher and he knows a fair bit about it all. I'm not a painter though, it's just what I've been finding more recently with paints.
Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on December 24, 2014, 09:20:49 PM I have found that it does seem to chip easier, I have a lot of chips where ive only just bumped it.
when i paint my FJ I will use 2k and see how I go. then I may repaint the fc. Title: Re: Post by: fe350chev on December 25, 2014, 09:18:48 AM Its so easy. Once you try it u will never go back. But I'm sure the acrylics are being made different. There's less steps, epoxy, topcoat then clear, no rubbing of base coat.
Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: TTV6FC on December 26, 2014, 09:53:31 PM Yeah Acrylic is real easy to fix and if you get it right it will look great for a long time but most of all it won't kill you nearly as quick as 2 pack will and not as illegal to paint at home....Couple of bonuses just there...
Title: Re: Post by: fe350chev on December 26, 2014, 11:08:04 PM If you can ask around it's best to try and hire a booth if possible. But makes sure you use a good mask with ANY paint. No paint is safe to breathe in. People don't think about their eyes too. Make sure you get a good mask when spraying acrylic, like a sundstrom with multiple filters. People seem to be experimenting with success using iso free hi fill primer fillers, then sealing that side of it and then using a base coat without the nastier hardners til they get it in a booth. Then they hang doors and everything and do a 1200 final rub and it's just a matter of doing the base coats with no rubbing and then applying the clear. I think it's a matter of how much budget you have vs the use of the car. I'm going to start using a few different methods on some interior parts and inners etc. The only problem hiring a booth is it can feel a bit rushed.

Good to see another one almost finished. Regards Neil H Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on January 11, 2015, 02:36:30 PM its ok paint, but i need to block it back and buff again, but im happy to leave it for the moment as over the years it will get better as it gets buffed.
it acrylic as said before, but as it was my first paint job so i put 3 thick coats of clear so i had plenty of paint to block back if it was to orange peel and i wanted plenty of shine. Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: DJ on January 11, 2015, 02:42:34 PM The paint & trim look great. That colour combination is one of the best I reckon, looks fresh & clean.

Jim Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: Frankiej on January 12, 2015, 07:42:53 PM Sorry nickz to jump in on your thread but I am a spray painter by trade with about 35 years in the industry and maybe I can help with some of the nitty grittys about paints and painting if that's cool.....
I done my apprenticeship with duco paint which was a form of acrylic loaded with lead properties for there build and there consistencies, but because of the lead issues they had to remove all lead which created a lot of dramas along the way to get it back to how it used to be, but I believe they have failed. And in order to get a good build with enough to buff then you really need around 6 coats of clear, I don't think you have enough on there...just my opinion....and its a good idea to let the paint dry completely meaning it needs to evaporate all its thinners before you should buff and generally that's around 4 to 6 weeks, then don't polish for at least the same amount of time because this will seal the paint and won't help with the curing. 2K is a chemical reaction so once it's dry that's it all over and usually after baking allow about 4 hours and it's done, air dry is 2 days as it won't dry any more. I am totally 2pak these days and find it much easier to rework than acrylic, you don't get the clogging in your sandpaper and like I said the chemical reaction is where it works to an advantage, you can buff 2k the same as acrylic but you can polish and seal straight away no need to wait. If anyone wants to know anymore on this stuff feel free to ask and I will be happy to answer any questions, or look me up on Frankies restorations on FB.....and sorry nickz again. Cheers Frankie. Title: Re: Post by: fe350chev on January 15, 2015, 10:03:51 PM Looks great. Are you planning on keeping the car very long. You have done a good job for your first job. At least you got something fairly complete now in fairly good time too. My dad has been giving me tips on clear coats etc. It's good to read up about the 2k process but there's a fair bit of weird info out there. Like blokes talking about what shine they get off the gun etc. But it's a bit different with 2k base coat. I'm going to be much more focussed than ever on the pre base coat preparation because once you get to that stage the rest happens a lot quicker than the old acrylic days.

Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on April 12, 2016, 07:45:33 AM Took the car for its first real drive, broke a new speedo cable, think the speedo locked up some how and the gearbox has a hole in the side of it, Just a little hole enough for the oil to leak out when it warms up.
Carby need work as at cruise is surges badly. Put in one of those ebay electronic ignitions to replace the points, made a big difference. Also cut 1 1/4 coils off the front springs. Took the wife with me on the drive, She hates it, to noisy and jerky and said she's not coming with me if i have to take it on a long drive :'( Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: FCRB26 on April 12, 2016, 08:14:31 AM Took the wife with me on the drive, She hates it, to noisy and jerky and said she's not coming with me if i have to take it on a long drive :'( Welcome to my world oh well at least it quietens down when she stays home. ;D Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: Harv on April 12, 2016, 10:50:39 AM Carby need work as at cruise is surges badly. Any idea what main metering jet is in it Nick? The 138 originally had a 0.051" main metering jet. Modern fuels (with oxygenates), the 0.030" overbore and the (lower vacuum) cam probably all add up to a higher fuel demand, and a slight lean-out (surge) at cruise. I was in a similar place with my FB, where swapping out to a 0.053” main metering jet solved the issue. Cheers, Harv Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: graham_fuller on April 12, 2016, 11:01:04 AM Hi Nick,
The Speedo problem is not uncommon. You will need to Lubricate the Speedo Head they tend to Cease up. Cheers, Graham Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on April 12, 2016, 06:58:58 PM I did have a 058 in it and changed it to a 051 but didn't change the surging, but ran much better in other areas and the long jet in the middle. the carb was of a 202 and i changed the base.
Ive just bought a remanufactured one, see if that fixes it. Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: Harv on April 13, 2016, 06:45:22 AM The 202's had a lot bigger venturi - typically 1 7/32" compared to the grey motor 1 1/32". The 3/16" difference in venturi diameter means the 202 carb develops less vacuum signal on the grey, and needs bigger jets to cope with the lower "suck". Changing from a 0.058" to a 0.051" will make it run leaner at low revs (where vacuum is higher), but probably make the cruise surge worse if anything.
Interesting to see of the new carb fixes the issue. Cheers, Harv Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on April 13, 2016, 07:43:17 PM ok, yes it did make it worse, i never thought of it that way.
I do have a external adjustable jet here that i was going to fit, maybe i will and try it out. Thank you. Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: Harv on April 14, 2016, 06:37:02 AM ok, yes it did make it worse, i never thought of it that way. I do have a external adjustable jet here that i was going to fit, maybe i will and try it out. Thank you. Could also be some crap sitting in the main metering jet circuit. Put your hand over the carb while it is running until the engine nearly stalls. Repeat a few times. This gives extra "suck" to the jets, and can suck through the crap. I'm not a fan of adjustable jets, but it will be a good tool to help identify your issue. As a starting point, gently seat the needle, then open it 3 turns. This will get you a jet close to 0.061". If that doesn't cure the surge, open one full turn more (total of 4 turns) to give a 0.067" jet. If it is still surging, then the issue is not jetting... 0.067" is a damn big jet. Cheers, Harv Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: ardiesse on April 14, 2016, 10:03:30 AM Nick,
Surging at cruise is also a symptom of over-advanced ignition timing. You can check for this by disconnecting the vacuum advance pipe from the distributor and going for a drive, or just running the engine at 1500 - 2000 rpm and seeing whether it still stumbles with the vacuum advance disconnected. I have a similar light-throttle lean-out condition in my FC. My first cure was a 52 main jet; but now I've gone back to a 51 main jet with a no. 68 idle tube from a red motor carburettor (the greys run a no. 70 idle tube). Rob Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on May 07, 2016, 09:38:18 PM I found another grey motor carb today, stripped it down , cleaned it up and fitted it to the car. Same problem still, i can't work it out.
also checked the advance, all with in spec. when reving its fine, but pull on some throttle, you can see the fuel coming out down the throat of the carb, but as you hold it the throttle the revs slowly die down the fuel just stops flowing out and it stalls. Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: FCRB26 on May 08, 2016, 06:28:29 AM I would be investigating the fuel pickup in the tank and fuel lines rule out a part blockage also has the fuel pump had a kit thru it ?
Just start at the back and work ur way forward also put the points back in while doing so i have had 2 set of petronix electronic ign fail now. Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on May 08, 2016, 06:28:08 PM it will drive ok if i keep modulating the throttle. Trying to make/fine a throttle body with injector that i can adapt, I hate carbs and as i make my own EFI computers i think its going to be the best way.
I was going to try boring out the centre of a standard carb body and mount injector/s inside the oil bath air cleaner spraying down the throat so it still looks standard, still working on that idea. Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: FCRB26 on May 08, 2016, 08:34:05 PM you could do it so clean and on a budget as well. use your electronic ignition for your trigger and a coolant temp sensor run something like this
http://jeremylawsonblog.com/post/28635142410/rodandcustomshow-autotrend-efi-has-captured-the#.Vy8VDiFv4uc Or rochester make one as well. Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: NickZ on May 15, 2016, 02:04:04 PM Fix my carb problem, fitted the external adjustable jet i bought some time ago. runs fantastic.
Ill hold off on the efi. Title: Re: FC Another Tassie car Post by: Harv on June 11, 2016, 06:36:35 AM Cool :). Glad it was the main metering jet as suspected.
