HORN CONNECTION

Can anyone please help...

My horn works...(ie) with the steering wheel off, if you arc a screwdriver from the brass contact ring to the central steering column, it works...but when I put the contact spring, spacer, the horn ring ect on, no go !

I have looked at the manual at the exploded view of the steering wheel, and I seem to have all the parts in the right place, but I just can;t see how it makes a connection to make the horn work.

Can anyone shed any more light on the subject, like....

- which way up does the contact spring sit ( outside edge curled up or down )
- is there any parts I'm missing

There's both a spring and a contact, that looks a bit like an old fashioned wooden peg.

Here's a pic, doesn't show the item all that clearly though.



Ace had a few of these NOS for sale a while back (source of the pic, actually, so blame him for the size of it ).

The outside edge should be down because this bit touches the contact set that sits in the steering wheel boss (shown in RET's picture).
When you push the horn button, the large spring deflects downward and touches the metal at the centre of the steering wheel thus completing the circuit.

Ken.....that's what I needed to know...BUT....I have my metal spring with it's outside edge facing down, and then I have the brown bakerlite spacer on top of that, but WHAT metal are you talking about on the steering wheel that the inner edge of the spring contacts with
I can see it needs to contact something there, but be buggered if I can find anything......
Is it the metal of the steering wheel boss, and I can see it, perhaps because I had my wheel painted

               I had a similar problem years ago and If I remember correctly the problem was that the paint on the boss interfered with the earth side of the circuit.
        But then again I could be wrong ,but might be worth looking at though.

Brad, if it is just that simple ( and I hope it is ), I tell ya....I'll be jumping for joy at the same time as kicking myself in the head for not realising earlier !

If only you could see how long and how inventive i was yesterday ( for the whole day ), trying to get the bloody thing to work.    Just ask my neighbours, as I'm sure they were sick of hearing me honking on and off for about 6 hours !

OK....just so you all know....I am recovering slowly from repeated blows to the head with both my left and right feet.

It's amazing what multiple layers of primer, undercoat, 2pack and clear coat will do to stuff up a really simply horn connection  

30 seconds with a flat head screw driver, scraping of the paint, and she works like a charm !

Maybe I could start a section on the forum of "STUPID THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR, WITH SIMPLE SOLUTIONS"....reckon I could have a few by now.
