Just bolt them backup, a lot easier and the connection between parts is better especially when aligning them up

Hi gents ..Another question for you ..Have taken my speedo apart ,the plastic dial lense which has the MPH numbers in it ,had a paint or similar product in it which has dried out and mostly fallen out ,,I seem to remember when last saw a speedo at night ,many moons ago ,it had a glow ,bit like a wrist watch with luminous hours  .If I am correct is there a product that I can use to replace what has come out ..thx Vern

Luminous paint would be available from a specialty paint supplier I would think. I've never bought it, but I've pulled a few speedos apart

Some good ones here.

Vern, not actually sure what rivets we used.

Dad used to work for an interstate trucking company and found some rivets in their workshop that were all but identical to the originals. I'm talking about 20 years ago...…..

Cheers, Graham

Graham ..ok thanks for that ..I'll probably just go with the bolts ..Re the speedo ,paint my wife got ,its just acrylic and didn't adhere to any plastic surfaces around the place except an old casset case , but its not luminous ,would just make the numbers green ,don't want that ,so that will go to grandkids ..I got onto some on line ,Luminous as they stated" glows in dark " ..a very light careful coat should have desired effect ...Vern ..

Vern,

I've re-wrapped generator field coils before.  Is your generator Lucas or Bosch?  (Lucas uses cloth, Bosch uses paper).  As a matter of interest, Wood Auto in the UK still has new field coils for Lucas C39 generators.  Otherwise, you could try looking up a bloke called John Everett in Riverwood.  Or you could try the Rewind Specialists at Seven Hills.

If you're keen, and relish a challenge, you can do the job yourself.

Only re-tape the field coils if the taping's fallen to bits and the wires are visible.  And don't use adhesive tape to rewrap the coils, because the adhesive degrades the wire's enamel insulation.

1. Carefully unwrap the field coil, noting where the taping starts and finishes - usually on the "yoke" (i.e. casing) side of the coil.  Pay particular attention to how the taping is wrapped around the wires at entry and exit to the coil.

2. Cut yourself two one-inch wide strips and two half-inch wide strips of brown paper, and have a glue stick at the ready.  Wrap the brown paper snugly, but not tightly, around the field coil for one and a half turns, gluing the brown paper to itself.  (Wider strips at the sides of the coil, narrower strips at the ends.)

3.  Go to a dressmaker's shop and buy a card of cloth bias binding tape.  Unwind the tape from the card and iron it out flat; then rewind it onto the card.  You have to pass the card through the centre of the coil when re-wrapping.

4.  Start the bias-binding tape in the right place, and wrap the coil.  The tape is wound through the middle of the coil in the same direction that the pole shoe goes through, that is, "down" through the inside of the field coil.  Tape the coil neither loose nor tight.  You want to preserve the rectangular cross-section of the coil as you re-wrap it.  Angle the tape so that the next turn covers between half and two-thirds the width of the previous turn.  When you get to the curved ends of the coil, the tape will overlap nearly completely on the inside of the bend.  Avoid creasing the tape - it does stretch somewhat.

5. Check to see that the coil still fits inside the pole shoe.  If it does, cut the tape off, and glue it down to itself in a place where the pole shoe will cover the tape end.  Install pole shoe to field coil, and re-install in generator, making sure the coil's in the right place.
