paint name

  can anyone out there tell me what the paint colour is called for the fe fc steering wheel  please

         (and don't tell me its black , or shinny black , or gloss black ) 

       it must have a name l was told it could be tuxedo black    any help

Hi Greg,
Tuxedo Black was a Torana colour in the 70's
As a wild guess the early Holden Black was "Carlsbad Black"  # 0055 in 1948.
At risk of death, the first 1948 colour was # 1 which was Black.
Only my opinion, good luck.

Carlsbad Black sounds feasible.
It's also listed on EJ paint codes as 0055, so looks to have been used by GMH for many years.
I notice that some of the colour swatches sharing the same name on the FE/FC chart differ slightly between production years, so this may also be the case with Carlsbad Black being around for so long.
On the table of colour combos however, code 259 is described as Cape Ivory over 'Black', and code 4 is described as simply 'Black'.

Hi Guys.

The original exterior Nitrocellulose paint finish, simply named 'Black' was used from 48 up until mid-FB, when Acrylic 'Magic Mirror' paint was introduced.

Form 1948 to mid-1953 it had the shade code number 253-2144, in 1953 it then became 253-6258 (sometimes 16258) even though it was still the same colour.

In mid-FB (1960 Acrylic intro) it became Carlsbad Black with the number 585-0055. For EH (Aug 63) it became Warrigal Black, number 568-6459.

It remained Warrigal Black until mid-HQ, when it became Tuxedo Black, number 568-15991. It then changed to Tuxedo Mk II, number 568-30861 around 1976.

AFAIK it remained Tuxedo until 2-pack paint was released in mid-VR (1994) when it became Panther Mica, H067.

I've been investigating this and this is what I have found
The specifications for the gearshift control support, horn contact support, the steering column support and the column mounting bracket are quite detailed as either synthetic enamel black 396-0070 or lacquer black 253-6258.
There is no spec for painting the wheel.
I think this is probably because the wheel may have been outsourced from a third party supplier and not painted by GMH. Along this line of thought, is the wheel actually painted or is the finish part of the manufacturing process. It appears to me to be more of a thinner coloured epoxy coating rather than a paint finish.
By the way, I also found that the pedal box support and handbrake are painted in general purpose black enamel 399-9394
So I would think that since all of these paints are NLA then it would be best to match the colour of the column as close as possible and go with that.

GMHwagon, I recently did a quick repair on a broken steering wheel for a friend. After the repair I used "white knight single pack black gloss" spray can.

GMHwagon, I also sanded,prepaired, etch primed and undercoated before finish coat. (need warm conditions)

 looks like yours come up well 
  and going by what ken has said, l think as long as you paint all of the other parts associated with the steering wheel and the column the same black it will look okay
