Going by the way the firewall has been modified, I'd say it could be an air intake of some kind, but where it is, it would only draw hot air from the engine bay?.

I reckon there must be something installed in the car where the glovebox used to be, that needs ventilation.

Got home early this arvo and the other half was watching an Aussie show called Dr Blake Mysteries. Set in Ballarat in the late 50s and had a few humpy's and FC's as well as early pommy cars, Mrk1 Zepher, Vanguards & Vauxhalls.
