I have heard that the rules for what size motors that are permitted for a modified cars have changed there was a formula that came up with 314 ci for the fc is that still true, been trying to find it on the rta website without success. I am looking for full rego in NSW with chev small block. Thanks Joe

I was told the same although some engineers interpret rules differently to allow an LS conversion ie 6L or 5.7L

There are more stories about calculations than I have had hot dinners . For NSW, guidance is given in the NATIONAL CODE OF PRACTICE for LIGHT VEHICLE CONSTRUCTION and MODIFICATION SECTION LA - ENGINE: http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/pdf/NCOP3_Section_LA_Engine_01jan2011_v3.pdfIts always subject to an individual engineers interpretation, but generally, for an FC sedan: a) 2377lb (= 1078kg) for the Business Sedan (heaviest FC sedan) in the GMH workshop manual = less than 1100kg, but more than 800kg b) Assuming naturally aspirated Original mass (kg) x 4 = max. capacity in cc’s 1078kg x 4 = 4312cc = 263ci.If you can convince the engineer that an FC sedan weighed more than 1100kg (regardless of if you are modifying a sedan, ute, wagon or van... the calcs are always based on sedan)... then: Original mass (kg) x 5 = max. capacity in cc’s
1100kg x 5 = 5500cc = 336ci.Cheers, Harv

It says recommended engine size so would it be up to the engineer to decide ?? I read in a ford forum (wash my mouth out) if you improve the strength of the vehicle and drive line you may go bigger than this but it's up to the engineer so with disc brake front chassis kit and 9 inch would that get you over the line? ps I will be speaking to a engineer to get his thoughts,

Yep, they are recommended capacities. Some engineers don't really worry about them, others are quite picky.
The engineer I am using is somewhere in the middle. He is happy for me to follow the "recommended" values with little testing required. He is also happy for me to fit a monster motor... just with more testing (like a beam test).

Although I'm going through SA. A 383 without door handles was recently passed (automated). I can't see how an engineer can be over ruled when given the job to fully satisfy the mods and testing. That's what I think otherwise what's the point if u can't trust them to do that. But a few court cases could add some clarity perhaps. If I do mine in SA. I can re register it in my name using the sa engineers certificate.

The testing I will do is in 3 stages. Chain pull and bend test, structure and running gear checked. Then the brake test and rollover test. I can't remember exactly what they said. They mite change rules by then!

The engineer does have discretion. A friend recently had an FJ passed running a 350, the local engineer wouldn't entertain the thought of passing it, an enginer 100km away didn't have a problem with it. Choose wisely.

Spoke to a engineer today he will let me go up to a 350 with body strengthening proper brakes and drive line

I think as with anything, common sense eventually prevails in these things. Does anyone know if there is the same rules on engine capacity or is it a case of a like engine. I think it should be different but I can't be bothered looking it up atm.
