It certainly is, back in the 80's I had a 1600 Celica box behind a red in an FC and it was fine. The 2000 cc box is even stronger.

http://users.tpg.com.au/users/loats/technical/ma61/gearboxes.html

Ratios are below, if it was a long stroke 202 I'd say the w version would be better having a taller first gear but as with the transit, getting it off the line was important so lower gearing was good. But the 186 in a lighter car should go good. it beautiful having that 3rd gear for longer inclines.

t50

Ratios:

    First Gear: 3.587:1
    Second Gear: 2.022:1
    Third Gear: 1.384:1
    Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
    Fifth Gear: 0.861:1

w50

    First Gear: 3.287:1
    Second Gear: 2.043:1
    Third Gear: 1.394:1
    Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
    Fifth Gear: 0.853:1
    Reverse: -4.039:1

A toyota T50 is a gearbox from a 1600cc engine, i used to play around with toyotas and ive smashed half a dozen of them with mild 1600 engines, I wouldn't put one behind a 6 cylinder.
a W50 would be a better, but a W57-W58 would be the better choice.

Id be guessing its a W50 and not a T50

It is a t 50 but i just did the spline count and it is 20 splines which is the weaker of the two so maybe you are right  cheers

it all comes down to how you plane to drive it,
yes the 55, 57 and 58 is a far better choices, and the 50 would b a good choice behind a grey, the power of the 186, idd personal not do it as the cose of setting it up and labor to have to do it all again just isn't worth it
