I don't know about it fitting, but it would look really nice with yellow bolts. Grin

I think you will find the red starter has two mounting bolts against the greys three, had a look at an old bell housing don't think it will fit in.

Red starter does fit. You just use 2 bolts.

Guys,

No, you can't use a red motor starter on a grey motor, because the ring gear and starter motor pinion have a different number of teeth.  The red motor pinions and ring gears have more teeth.

The red motor starter will bolt up to a grey engine/gearbox, but when you turn the key, the teeth will grind and not engage.

The EH 149 starter motor is the same as the late grey starter, except with two bolt holes and a pinion to suit the red motor ring gear.

I don't know whether it's possible to fit a grey motor pinion onto a red motor starter.

Hi,
Following on from above, can a red motor armature be fitted to a grey motor starter and the grey pinion fitted to the armature to make it work?

And is it an simple job to change the pinion?

Thanks

You can fit an EH 149 armature to a grey starter motor, but you'd need to fit the grey pinion to the armature.

In any other case, assume that a grey pinion can't be fitted to a red starter motor.  But I'd love to see it done . . .

Got me curious. A few years ago I helped out one of the local humpy lads (Squirrel). He had a red motor starter on the grey, worked fine (albeit I never saw it on the car). Took the car in to Mr Tedesco for service, who was not impressed. Scared Squirrel enough that he wanted a grey starter. I swapped him a grey motor one for his red one.

I too understood the red starter will hang off it’s two bolts and work on a grey. Might have to drag it out and check for myself.

Cheers,
Harv
