The FE I bought a little while ago has just ran out of rego (Victoria). I have not yet sold the plates (FE-1957) but I am wondering does it need to be registered to be able to sell the plates or do I have a 3 or 6 month period of grace before it must be re-registered? It has been to the mechanics and it is ready to go, all is good but I wonder is it worth me wasting the money for rego? If I do rego it but sell the plates can I cancel the rego and get pro rata refund back or not?

Thanks

Paul

Hi Paul

Cant help you with you question but the first thing I would do is talk to your local RTA and ask them this question and at least that way you know where you stand, and while your at it you might check on the procedure in the transferring the plates to the new owner. I know that where I am we can store plates at the RTA for a fee Thus keeping ownership this may be an option if you don't wish to re register.

Kind regards

Hi Julius

Just in In case you weren't aware - Paul actually lives in Ireland and, I understand he is currently on holiday in France (yeah, hard life!  Roll Eyes)  I also think that at the present point in time, he is having difficulties even getting on this site let alone contacting the Victorian RTA.  I also believe his dad (who picked up the FE for him) is visiting him at the moment - so he can't even get him to chase up the info for him.

So, this would be why Paul is asking if anyone on the forum might be give him some advice on their dealings with the Victoria RTA.  But thanks for trying to help him out anyway   Cheesy

I have got two sets of Vic. plates at home (destined for my Sedan and Van), and if I wanted to sell them, I could, no problems, any time.
Don't register the car in Victoria for no reason Paul. You can keep and sell them at any time.

I believe that in vic if your car runs out of rego and you have personalised plates unless you pay a holding fee you will be recharged  the full amount or close to it when you want to use them again

Go to http://www.vplates.com.au/ should be able to help.

There is some information on the bottom of the page is a button "Before you buy second hand plates"

And more in the Support dropdown menu "Transfering my plates"

Buying and selling plates only refers to Custom Plates that you own. Assuming FE 1957 is a Custom Plate, then you own it.

Might pay to also read the Terms of Sale. Section 8  "If your registration number has not been assigned to a vehicle, you must keep the number plates in a secure location and must not allow them to be affixed to a motor vehicle unless VicRoads has assigned the registration number to that vehicle."

Wow, just checked out the Victorian Heritage Plates page - are they really serious about wanting $10,000 each for  heritage plates in the number series 100,000 to 285,000?   Shocked  I mean I know they are "hand made" in the old tradition but, wow!  Shocked

But, on the other hand, if there is a market for them (and there will be some demand I am sure) then at that price if they sell every plate they will rake in $1,850,000,000.00   Shocked Shocked  Then, add to that the money they anticipate they will get at auction for the earlier number plates and you guys in Victoria are going to be driving on roads paved with gold!  Cheesy

At the last Shannon's Auction in June VIC Number Plate 543 sold for $75,000.  6 number VIC plates are bringing up to $10K while 5 number VIC plates are up to $15K

S.A. Number Plate 445 & 446 sold for $16,000 & $16,500 at the March Auction.

I agree, there will always be plates selling for big $, especially 1 - 3 digit and number combinations unique/specific to cars or people's beliefs.  I just question if there is really such a strong demand for all 185,000 of the 6 digit plates at $10k each. A certain number of them, definitely yes, but all of them?

My car still runs the plate it was originally registered with, and, I know a lot of others would dearly love to have their car's original plates too.  I just don't know if I would part with $10k for a plate!   But, that's just me and I'm probably a cheap skate! Cheesy
