I have been reconditioning some starter motors and generators for my grey motor FC.  I have one starter that has 4 brushes.  The only visual differences I can find is a small amount of blue colour on the solenoid.  What year/model was the 4 brush starter motor first used?  I presume they have more torque than the 2 brush unit.

What is the model number on the case of the starter?

Ken

The full stampings on the motor, which is a Bosch, are:  U-EED 0,8/12 R37
The block is was/is attached is one from an EJ stamping

The starter you have is from an FB/EK/EJ. The 4 brush system started with this model. The 2 brush starter from the FE/FC has a locked torque figure of 7.75 ft/lb at 350 amps whilst the 4 brush starter achieves 8.5 ft/lb at 280 amps.
