1  Technical Board / Restoration Help / Fuel pump on: March 07, 2007, 01:15:07 AM
Gday all
     Just a simple question.
Does later model red motor fuel pumps bolt onto a grey?

2  Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: VH40 brake booster problems on: August 15, 2006, 04:49:34 AM
Gday all,
Well I spent quite a bit of time over the weekend on my brake problem.
Firstly, I had replaced the front drum brakes with discs, so thanks to Vinnie and Michael I located the check valve in the master cylinder and removed it, NO CHANGE.
Then I bit the bulled and pulled the booster out, and opened it up to check the main diaphragm. What I found was, when I originally had the booster disassembled for stripping and painting I put masking tape over the little tube that gos to the atmospheric valve (inside and out), and didn’t remove the tape on the inside before reassembly.
     The human factor.

P.S. I picked up a nice straight EK yesterday.

Thanks, Michael and Vinnie,
I think you blokes have nailed it, as I have just retro fitted a HR disc brake front end to my EJ utilising the original master cylinder.
I also gave my VH40 the once over last night, and apart from finding out it is actually a VH44-4; everything looked to be serviceable. So tonight I will go looking for the valve in the master cylinder.

Thanks Jimmys57, at least I’ve fitted it correctly.
Vinnie, yeah I've been scratching my head too, but I've been thinking more that the small diaphragm is stuck in the “actuated” position closing the atmospheric vent and keeping the main diaphragm “SUCKED IN” permanently, thus applying the brakes.
Any other thoughts???

5  Technical Board / Modification Help / VH40 brake booster problems on: August 08, 2006, 04:15:06 AM
Gday all,
I am after some advice, with regards to, a VH40 brake booster I have just plumbed into my EJ braking system.
I am running a grey and have sourced the vacuum from the inlet manifold via a 25mil heater hose, going straight into the diaphragm housing, the VH40 is mounted in the engine bay on the RH side, diaphragm housing pointing FWD, vent facing down. The Master cyl is plumbed into the fitting closest to the diaphragm on top, the next fitting on top moving aft is the bleed nipple, the horizontal one at the end goes straight to the brakes.
The problem I am having is that with the engine running and vacuum connected to the VH40, the brakes are permanently on. Disconnect the vacuum and the brakes come off. With vacuum disconnected the brakes work as an unboosted system. Connect vacuum brakes are on.
I did put an “O” Ring kit through the VH40, have I done something wrong? and which bit would I look at first.
Can someone also advise on the correct method of plumbing in a VH40, and also the basic principals of operation of the VH40.

Regards
Scotty
6  Technical Board / Modification Help / Re: grey motor rebuild on: April 22, 2006, 03:25:47 AM
G'day Ray
I have recently completed a cheap rebuild on my gray 138.
Whilst it was out of the car, I completely stripped it (not too difficult) cleaned everything. Paying particular attention to the pressure regulating plunger in the oil pump. Lucky for me all parts were in good nick.
I got top end and bottom end gasket kits from repco for about $150.00 and reassembled the donk using same bearings and rings.
It has been in my FJ for about 12 months now and is running like a dream.
I am now rebuilding a second grey (132), this time I need new pistons. My #3 is about to do what your #6 has done. My local repco here in Katherine has quoted me just over $300.00 for a piston assy kit. So this rebuild will be a little more expencive than the last.
But I guess what I am trying to say, is that while you have the engine out it is not all that hard, expencive or time consuming to strip, it clean it, have a good look at everything, and put it back together with new gaskets. Resulting in peace of mind.

Regards
Scotty

P.S. I did notice the some of my welsh plugs were just about stuffed so I replaced all of them too. (easy)

Finaly an update on my oil press problem.

When I pulled the sump off I was greeted by a skailly sort of old oil residule that had coated everything.I then removed the oil pump strainer, (it was clear, as could be). I then opened the pump, and found the oil pressure relief valve was stuck in the open position.

Mystery solved.

I have some great pictures if someone can give me guidence as to how to post them.

Scotty,

Thanx to everyone for your help and guidence.

Jock,
No, the dizzy was never out. I am thinking the pump may have failed a while back, thus the bending of the push rods.

Gday,
I have an update on my oil pressure problem. I pulled the oil press sender from the block, got the missy to turn the engine over, and nothing came out the hole, at all. So, I pulled the engine on Saturday, put the gearbox and 6V starter and genny on another grey I just finish rebuilding for an EJ. Wacked the new donk in the FJ 1st thing Sunday morning (thinking I'll make the car show by 3pm), all went well untill I tryed lining the front engine mout up. The front mounting plates on EJ's and FJ's bend in different directions and extend down different lengths, so after manufacturing addaption plates and finnishing the installation, the 6V starter motor did'nt have enough nuts to turn the new "tight" engine over.

Missed the car show, and havent trouble shot the original grey yet, but will update you when I do.

11  Technical Board / General Technical / Grey motor "oil pump" on: September 23, 2005, 08:37:07 PM
Gday All,
I bent some pushrods last week, and after reading this web sight I pulled the rods and sraightened them in a vice with the help of a hammer. (came up spot on).
I disassembled the rocker mechanism and cleaned out 49 years of sludge and oil tarnish. After reassembling and adjusting rockers engine started 1st pop and ran sweet. Except, no oil pressure.(Oil light did not go out)
Oil line to rockers is attached. Line was not loose in block.
Do grey motor oil pumps just stop working one day?
Can oil pump inlet get blocked?
If pump is shagged can you get new/reco'ed pumps?
Can you retro fit say a red motor oil pump to a grey?

A quick fix would be great, as I need to show the car on Sunday.

Cheers
Scotty

Gday Mat,
I have just found this great web sight, and have been reading with interest all the tech and mod tips.
My hydromatic has just packed it in and I am very interested in puting a trymatic behind my Grey too.
Can you send me details of your guy in Melbourne for the mod kit.

Thanx
Scotty
