gidday,

is there any way to tell if engine in car was the original at time of assembly. i ask this cause i would like to confirm if car is 58 or 59. currently my rego says maufacture date is 1958. the dilema comes from that when i put the id # in it says based on engine # manufacture date is dec 1958 and chassis # says vehicle was assembled during 1959. so which do i choose any comments.  Huh

    id plate

            fc2106-1700-s

   trim   194 649

   paint 256 2051

  engine L527 460

  chassis fc 21061700s

  thanks paddy. Cool

Hi Paddy.

Get the number thats on the top of the offside inner guard, it should start with an 8 or FC, and feed that into the ID tool with the other info and that should help you.

If the number starts with an 8, that would indicate its a December 58 build. Ken McLean knows all about this.

regards
John

GM-H stopped using the year-in-decade prefix to the chassis number around the 12th December 1958, so there are about 3 weeks' worth of 1958 FCs with an FC-xxxx-N chassis number.

Your engine number (if it's original) would suggest that it is a mid-to-late December 1958 built vehicle. See this page for more info.

And to answer your question, the only way to be sure about the engine being the factory fitted item is if you have the original purchase papers.  However, Ken's data would be able to triangulate the chassis number, body number and engine number and give you a pretty confident assessment of whether they match or not.  Reply with the chassis number.

Hope that helps.

cheers

3rd point from the left is your engine versus Sydney Body number.  It would appear to me that your engine number is not right for the body number as it is a fair way off the straight line of best fit.  Possibly someone chose another engine number which was close to the original or just lucky that it was close, or very remotely it is the right engine for the car but it is not in line with other production.  As you can see from the graph, the engine number for your body number should be in the region of 480 000

Regards  Ken
